"Anyone who knows me knows that my sexual orientation is not everything about me. They know who I am, they know I'm an athlete and that I'd rather they'd talk about my skills and football expertise.

"We are female, we are athletes, it's just one small part of us," she said of being a lesbian.

"For some people it's important, but it doesn't necessarily have to define everything that I am."

In Justices’ Calculations on Gay Marriage, a Legal Golden Ratio Looms

In Justices’ Calculations on Gay Marriage, a Legal Golden Ratio Looms | LGBT News | Scoop.it
When the court struck down bans on interracial marriage in 1967, such unions were still illegal in 16 states.

When the court struck down laws making gay sex a crime in 2003, 13 states still had antisodomy measures.

Should the court take up the question of same-sex marriage this term or next, as it seems likely to, the unions will be against the law in no more than 15 states.

“The coincidence is hard to miss,” said Susan Sommer, a lawyer with Lambda Legal who has been litigating same-sex marriage cases for more than a decade.

Tim Cook Speaks Up

Tim Cook Speaks Up | LGBT News | Scoop.it
When I arrive in my office each morning, I’m greeted by framed photos of Dr. King and Robert F. Kennedy. I don’t pretend that writing this puts me in their league. All it does is allow me to look at those pictures and know that I’m doing my part, however small, to help others. We pave the sunlit path toward justice together, brick by brick. This is my brick.

Joe. My. God.: BREAKING: Ninth Circuit Court Strikes Down Marriage Bans In Nevada & Idaho

Joe. My. God.: BREAKING: Ninth Circuit Court Strikes Down Marriage Bans In Nevada & Idaho | LGBT News | Scoop.it
amos lim's insight:

To allow same-sex couples to adopt children and then to label their families as second-class because the adoptive parents are of the same sex is cruel as well as unconstitutional. Classifying some families, and especially their children, as of lesser value should be repugnant to all those in this nation who profess to believe in “family values.” In any event, Idaho and Nevada’s asserted preference for opposite-sex parents does not, under heightened scrutiny, come close to justifying unequal treatment on the basis of sexual orientation.

This is what same-sex marriage looks like now: as gay as the Mormon missionary position

This is what same-sex marriage looks like now: as gay as the Mormon missionary position | LGBT News | Scoop.it
That Monday’s anti-ruling ruling involves many states that might not presently be ready for acceptance proves that a great deal of work still needs to be done. As the nation lurches toward marriage equality piecemeal, Spaulding’s fears are warranted – even if some savvy Republicans are starting to opportunistically see the light – and the road to 2016. Keegin-Moring, of Putnam City North High School, may be brave enough to risk being out as a choir teacher, but the fact that she or Pam Spaulding or Americans in most states can be fired for their sexuality is an outrage, as is the outrageous level of violence faced by LGBT people every day in this country, no matter what the supreme court decides to do by accident on purpose. That is why we need sexual orientation to be added to an amendment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; that is why accidental progress is not enough – why missionaries in Utah won’t be able to go to church without the looks, why gay moms in Oklahoma will always say “almost”, why a badass black lady in North Carolina will still fear for her life … until progress becomes the law of the land, not just another day when Antonin Scalia got a fast one pulled on him.

Marriage is not the end of the rainbow, even though same-sex weddings may soon, miraculously, be performed over Kansas. But each day that moves the world a little bit closer toward that dream of full equality is a beautiful step in its own right, and Monday was a beautiful day indeed.
amos lim's insight:

We might win Marriage Equality soon but there are still a lot of issues that needs to be addressed.

Check Out This Michigan Candidates Awesome Response to Anti-gay Bigotry: READ |News | Towleroad | LGBT News | Scoop.it
“Let me tell you what pro-family is, Eugene. Pro-family is standing by your gay brother for merely being who he is. Pro-family is accepting your cousins, your friends, and homosexual parents across the globe for who they are. It is recognizing that all credible studies that have explored the issue of gay and lesbian parents have shown that they raise well-adjusted children who are just as successful as those raised by straight parents. Pro-family means that you’re not going to rip established families apart because you can’t see through the veil of your own self-defeating prejudices.

Joe. My. God.: New Report On LGBT Poverty

Joe. My. God.: New Report On LGBT Poverty | LGBT News | Scoop.it
amos lim's insight:

The report documents the often-devastating consequences when the law fails LGBT families. For example, children raised by same-sex parents are almost twice as likely to be poor as children raised by married opposite-sex parents. Additionally, 15 percent of transgender workers have incomes of less than $10,000 per year; among the population as a whole, the comparable figure is just four percent.

To demonstrate the connection between anti-LGBT laws and the finances of LGBT Americans and their families, the report outlines how LGBT people living in states with low levels of equality are more likely to be poor, both compared to their non-LGBT neighbors, and compared to their LGBT counterparts in state with high levels of equality. For example, the denial of marriage costs gay and lesbian families money; same-sex couples with children had just $689 less in household income than married opposite-sex couples in states with marriage and relationship recognition for same-sex couples, but had an astounding $8,912 less in household income in states lacking such protections.

For me, this really hits home. One of my best friend's mom is trying to get her to go to conversion camp because she is bisexual. Scientific evidence shows the negative effects conversion therapy has on people, but for her mom, being gay is against the bible and shouldn't be allowed. If more people were to be accepting of others and not socialized by institutions such as religion then maybe conversion therapy would be a thing of the past.

‘Based on justice and equality’? | Advocate Magazine

Singapore must move towards recognising its citizens, all of its citizens, as equal. It must entitle each and every one of them, regardless of their race, language, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity, to be treated with respect and dignity. It is only then that it can truly call itself a society ‘based on justice and equality’.

Tim Cook and the End of Gay Rights as a Wedge Issue - The New Yorker

Tim Cook and the End of Gay Rights as a Wedge Issue - The New Yorker | LGBT News | Scoop.it
Tim Cook’s coming out may be the harbinger of another chapter for the Republican Party, as it looks to its traditional constituencies in the corporate world and Wall Street and finds, increasingly, executives who are not afraid to let them know that they are at odds with the G.O.P.’s position on gay rights. Brian Ellner, a public-relations executive who was heavily involved in the New York campaign for marriage equality—which was strongly supported by senior leaders in the financial-services community—told me, “The incredible velocity of marriage wins and rising public support for equality has rendered it a non-issue in most states.” More important, Ellner added, “Opposing equality is no longer a wedge issue. It’s a loser.”

Same-Sex Shift

Same-Sex Shift | LGBT News | Scoop.it
Fewer GOP gubernatorial candidates actively oppose gay marriage, and many are quietly accepting it.
amos lim's insight:

The 14 candidates vary in their positions—and in their prospects. Most of them have not personally endorsed gay marriage, but rather have argued that whatever their own beliefs, they would not seek to undo the law. Typical is Tom Foley, the GOP gubernatorial nominee in Connecticut, who has declared, "I personally think marriage is between a man and a woman, but … as governor, I'd support the law." Only a few Republican contenders in this group (most clearly in New Hampshire and Minnesota) have left themselves some wiggle room by saying that while they would not push to uproot the law, they might sign a bill doing so if it reached them.
