Great post. Often in studies of women vs. men they don't actually take the women into account. The study starts out assuming they are the same and will (or should) react in the same way.
Craftypants Carol's comment, April 4, 2013 1:24 PM
I also like that it acknowledges that the way women are portrayed in porn is so fake - from the facial expressions to the orgasms - and what's exciting for women about that? i like porn where both participants actually seem like they are really having passionate sex. and it doesn't have anything to do with romance or candles either!

Maggie Nash: Why do I love BDSM romance?

Maggie Nash: Why do I love BDSM romance? | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

You know 10 years ago I would never ever have dreamed of writing about BDSM, let alone writing BDSM stories. Not knowing anything about it other than what I'd heard in whispers over the years, I thought (and I'm sure a lot of people still do) that it was all about being beaten up and tortured. I couldn't even imagine a time when a person would want to be put through what I saw as an unnecessary and painful ordeal. I thought these people must have some type of psychiatric disorder and they desperately needed help.

Phone Sex, Curing Male Lonelieness

Phone Sex, Curing Male Lonelieness | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Much of our society focuses on the sexist dichotomy that “women need emotional connections but men just want sex,” ignoring that men need emotional intimacy too.

Men, like women, can suffer from two forms of loneliness:

* Social Loneliness, a lack of social network, &/or
* Emotional Loneliness, the absence of close emotional relationships.

Both types of loneliness are common, often existing at the same time. And high levels of success and wealth does not make a man immune to either of them, largely because loneliness is a feeling and therefore a matter of perception.

Wild world of sex apps

Wild world of sex apps | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Once “dating” went something like this: shower, shave your legs, get dressed, round up some mates (ideally less attractive than yourself) go out, talk rubbish to strangers, gradually discover you don’t like them and attractive people don’t like you.

...Some have, of course, argued apps like these encourage infidelity and promiscuity but I think it is important to remember that making things easier does not necessarily make them happen. If you really want to cheat, you will. If you want to sleep around, you will. You don’t need an app for that, my friends.

Queer Trans Conference to Address Intersections of Race, Class, Sex, Gender

Queer Trans Conference to Address Intersections of Race, Class, Sex, Gender | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

This year’s annual Queer and Trans Conference (QTC), entitled “Queers at Work,” will take place this weekend around campus. The completely student-run conference will include guest speakers, workshops, and even a circus performance in Olde Club.

Organizer Maria Elena Covarrubias ‘15 said that one of the major goals of the QTC is “amplifying or centering the voices we usually don’t hear in the Queer-Trans movement.” Most of the guest speakers were chosen with this in mind.

For example, Tiny, who the QTC website describes as “a poverty scholar, revolutionary journalist, lecturer, Indigenous Taino, and Roma mama of Tiburcio,” will give a workshop on Saturday titled “Survival Sex, Survival Work and Survival.”

Overall, the conference will try to “create a space for those who are interested to introduce themselves,” said Joan Huang ’15, another organizer.

An analysis of the implementation of PEPFAR’s anti-prostitution pledge and its implications for successful HIV prevention among organizations working with sex workers

An analysis of the implementation of PEPFAR’s anti-prostitution pledge and its implications for successful HIV prevention among organizations working with sex workers | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Clearly within policy arenas there are mixed perspectives on the impacts of the PEPFAR restrictions with regards to sex work. However, real world prevention care and treatment of HIV and AIDS for sex workers does not occur in policy arenas but rather on the ground, in venues and avenues far removed from policy discourse. Meanwhile, although policymakers reflect on the intent or the outcome of the pledge, on the ground the policy has and may continue to have consequences. As a result of the pledge, in many instances information sharing about successful programming with sex workers has nearly ceased. Sex work programming has become a taboo topic; organizations that receive other funding are likely to be interested in or to seek US government contracts and funds. Others with specific missions have reigned in all activities unrelated or tangentially related to their missions; this has affected many sex work projects the world over. The anti-prostitution pledge has prevented the sharing of information about successful programming and prevented scaling up successful operations.

Women Making Pornography

Women Making Pornography | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

What I have found are films that have empowered and inspired me. Films that feature women I can identify with. Mothers and daughters, single or partnered, younger and older, thinner or plumper. Women who confront culturally imposed sanctions regulating their behavior, and deeply felt issues shaping their lives. Women who reject the speed limits of desire enforced upon women. Women who refuse to be labeled.

Behind these films are educated women with high ideals and intriguing visions. Women who object to the discriminating portrayal of their sex in porn and popular media, and who speak up for women sexually and politically. Some of them stay clear of the “porn” word lest they turn their targeted audience away from their work. Instead they market their films as “adult,” “explicit,” “sensual,” or “erotic.” But others refuse to allow men free rein in defining porn, and therefore claim the “porn” word as a way to subversively change its meaning.

Deanna Dahlsad's curator insight, March 27, 2013 12:57 PM

Also from the article:

Nielsen/NetRatings surveys have repeatedly found that women represent approximately a third of all online porn consumers. A new major international research project on people’s everyday uses of porn (in any format) also quotes this number in a preliminary report, which furthermore reveals that younger women show significantly greater interest in porn than do older women, suggesting a generational shift that may eventually “reduce the overall differences between male and female interest in pornography.”[iii] In 2010, the UK-based edition of the women’s magazine Cosmopolitan found that 60 percent of its readers have watched porn and an additional 14 percent said that they were open to the idea.[iv]

Nevertheless, a “woman watching porn” is still surrounded by a lot of social stigmas. Even researching porn is not a neutral topic. I’ve received many awkward reactions, unwelcome solicitations, and unkind rejections from people when they find out about my work on porn.

I want to hire a sex worker to help my mentally ill brother | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

So hire a sex worker for your brother, SIS, if you think it will help—even if it just eliminates an excuse that’s blocking his progress—and there’s no need to drive to Nevada. Siouxsie suggests you look for an “experienced” (read: somewhat older) escort with an online presence in your area. A sex worker who’s over 25 or 30 and maintains her own website—and has write-ups on escort review sites—is not just far less likely to be trafficked or exploited, she’s far more likely to be experienced and patient. She may even have worked with men like your brother before.

Dear Conservative Christian Leaders: Why Are You Silent About Rape?

Dear Conservative Christian Leaders: Why Are You Silent About Rape? | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

The problem does not seem to be that you feel shy or squeamish talking about sex. You have talked in exhausting depth about a long list of what you see as America’s sexual sins—everything from pornography to gay marriage. You have written entire series of books telling women how to be pure and other books, such as Every Man’s Battle, instructing men on how to keep themselves from lustful thoughts. And on the other side of the equation, there are countless Christian sex manuals that tell married couples in very explicit detail how to have a mutually satisfying sex life.

Yet, in the thousands of church services that I have attended, in the countless hours of Christian radio I have listened to, and in the hundreds of books I have read by Christian authors, not a single one has exhorted the faithful not to rape. I conducted dozens of Google and Yahoo searches and was unable to find a single instance in which a conservative Christian leader has advocated publicly for consent in sexual interactions.
