Women Who Pay For Sex ~ Mara Speaks

Women Who Pay For Sex ~ Mara Speaks | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Dear Maggie,

I’m a middle aged lesbian-leaning bisexual academic who identifies as a feminist.  Your blog came to my attention a few years ago via Twitter, and your daily digest of police state violence against sex workers is an essential part of my political reading.  While you have a wide array of discussions on your blog and in the comment threads, I have noticed one voice missing:  That of The Jane.  Or at least, This Jane.

I am a woman who has paid for sex and I liked it.  If I were a rich woman, I would unabashedly procure sexual services from providers of various genders.  If I were powerful enough, I would be honest and unashamed by such too.

Should Men’s Products Fear a Woman’s Touch? | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Most eight-year-olds are familiar with cooties: an imaginary infectious disease spread through proximity to children of the opposite sex. We eventually outgrow the silly idea.

But when it comes to the world of consumer products, fear of associating with the opposite sex, at least for some, never really goes away.

What’s So Bad About a Boy Who Wants to Wear a Dress?

What’s So Bad About a Boy Who Wants to Wear a Dress? | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Many parents and clinicians now reject corrective therapy, making this the first generation to allow boys to openly play and dress (to varying degrees) in ways previously restricted to girls — to exist in what one psychologist called “that middle space” between traditional boyhood and traditional girlhood. These parents have drawn courage from a burgeoning Internet community of like-minded folk whose sons identify as boys but wear tiaras and tote unicorn backpacks. Even transgender people preserve the traditional binary gender division: born in one and belonging in the other. But the parents of boys in that middle space argue that gender is a spectrum rather than two opposing categories, neither of which any real man or woman precisely fits.

I made the mistake of dating a guy who would later go on to write a several-act manifesto about my alleged sex life and post it to every forum he could create a handle for

For Brazil’s sex workers, a World Cup brothel boom turns to bust

For Brazil’s sex workers, a World Cup brothel boom turns to bust | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

In a country with conflicted attitudes about its sexy reputation, workers speculate that men spent too much money on tickets or the high cost of living...

“They think that because of Carnaval, bikinis and the tiny clothes we wear.” That’s what women are supposed to be like here, added Ms. Vasconcelos. “But then men say, ‘there are no good women any more, there are no women you can marry,’ ” because the sexy image women feel compelled to present is also considered tainted.

The sociologist Marlene Teixeira Rodrigues, an expert on gender and prostitution at the University of Brasilia, calls it the “daily hell” of Brazilian women. “You’re thought of as accessible – women in all social classes, races, and generations, in every way,” she said.

Who's Afraid of Black Sexuality?

Who's Afraid of Black Sexuality? | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Well, for a long time, lots of people. Including scholars. Particularly black scholars.

If sex was once difficult to discuss openly, black sex was especially fraught. It touched on too many taboos: stereotypes and caricatures of "black Hottentots" with freakish feminine proportions; of asexual mammies or lascivious Jezebels; of hypersexual black men lusting after white women. It brought up painful memories of white control over black bodies during slavery; of rape and lynching; of Emmett Till, a teenager tortured and murdered in 1955 for supposedly flirting with a white woman
