Why (Some) Women Love Strap-Ons

Why (Some) Women Love Strap-Ons | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Life is more free now. But we’re also being forced to ask ourselves some serious questions. Like, ‘Does shaving my armpits make me a bad feminist?’ And, more pressingly, ‘Is my strap-on a symbol of male supremacy?’ And if so, should I set it on fire as a performance art piece?”

Vote now for the 2015 Feminist Celebrity of the Year

Vote now for the 2015 Feminist Celebrity of the Year | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it
The Ms. Foundation for Women celebrates all feminists all year long. Women and men who believe in social, economic and political equality are working every day to change the conversation and build a more equal society for ALL genders. Their work makes all the difference.
In 2014 we teamed up with Cosmopolitan.com for our first EVER Feminist Celebrity of the Year survey. You voted and we recognized those who used their impact, influence and notoriety to promote true equality.  These celebrities not only publicly identified as feminists but worked to change the national and international dialogue around diversity, inclusiveness and intersectionality.

I think stereotypes have been getting exposed long enough. Ripping band aids off isn't enough. You, Gracie and I have seen all these same stereotypes for more than 30 years. Problems are exposed but the laws don't change. It's 2014 and a male politician is still talking about "legitimate rape". He understands it is rape but because the laws are so mushy he can't see it as a real problem.

Activist Spotlight: Deon Haywood on Justice and the Movement in New Orleans

Activist Spotlight: Deon Haywood on Justice and the Movement in New Orleans | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

In May of this year, I talked to Deon Haywood, Executive Director of Women With A Vision in New Orleans about her approach to organizing. WWAV scored a significant grassroots legal and political victory in the last year with the NO Justice campaign, which removed hundreds of cis and trans women from Louisiana’s registered felony sexual offender rolls. Deon is a longtime activist in the city of New Orleans, with a history of organizing low-income women of color around reproductive justice, harm reduction, and human rights.

...We are not all in the same boat. And if we keep playing like we are, we’re not really going to make the kind of change we’d like to see. Because the women I work with are never going to be able to jump into the sex workers’ rights movement. They don’t feel like that movement is for them.

Q&A with Marie Calloway: Why does she write about sex?

Q&A with Marie Calloway: Why does she write about sex? | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

For several years, Marie Calloway, 23, has explicitly described her lifestyle and sexual exploits on her blog. Now Calloway (a pseudonym she has used since the age of 19) has published a book, "what purpose did i serve in your life" (Tyrant Books, $19), said to be an account of her sexual encounters.

In "what purpose did i serve in your life," Calloway opens up about her relationships, which predominantly originate from cyber contact, as well as her sexual fantasies, largely involving self-degradation. In fact, her words and pornographic photographs (including images of her breasts covered in bruises) were considered so controversial that three separate printers refused to print the book.

A former women’s studies major, Calloway first garnered attention with her story "Adrien Brody," published on MuuMuu House, in which she describes a brief affair with a well-known New York editor. Since then, readers have been attempting to label her as either a trailblazing feminist or a self-destructive masochist.

What Are Women Earning? (And How Are Men Shrinking?)

What Are Women Earning? (And How Are Men Shrinking?) | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

One should also note that this is not simply a matter of “feminism having won, so just let it all go away.” For the findings also reveal that “total family income is higher when the mother, not the father, is the primary breadwinner.” Thanks, pink collar ghetto, unequal pay, and continuing notions of gender inequality in the workplace. Not to mention all the BS traditional notions of motherhood.

Never mind the facts, however; let’s just get to the million dollar subtext question Liza Donnelly put forth regarding the 37% — the married mothers who have a higher income than their husbands: Can Husbands Handle Being Outearned By Their Wives?

...If you want to dismiss all this as the ramblings of irrelevant talking asshats on Fox (for which I will gently remind you that their rhetoric is often too dangerous to be dismissed), you’ll need to also know about this other study, called In Sickness and In Wealth...

Outcry in Iran after police punish man by dressing him like a woman | The Observers | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

An unusual punishment has shocked many in Iran. On April 15, police paraded a convicted criminal through the northwestern city of Marivan dressed in traditional Kurdish women’s clothing. This has prompted protests in the streets, online, and even in Iran’s parliament. The day after the incident, a local feminist organisation, the Marivan Women’s Community, organised a protest to denounce this punishment -- which was handed down by a local court -- as insulting to Kurdish women. About a hundred men and women attended.

Womanist Musings: Andrea Dworkin On Transgender

Womanist Musings: Andrea Dworkin On Transgender | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

There has been a lot of heated discussion among Second-Wave radical feminists, concerning when transphobic theory "took over" the discourse. Women who claim to be of the hard-core Andrea Dworkinschool of radical feminism, steadfastly adhere to the concept that trans people are not the gender they say they are and will not use preferred pronouns; some go so far as to edit comments on their blogs and change the pronouns, for example. Many of these Second-Wavers believe it is reactionary to "endorse" (for lack of a better word) the gender identities of trans folks. Much talk about the "gender binary" (male/female, historically constructed as mirror images, opposites, yin and yang) and how transgenderism "upholds" this binary, etc etc etc.

For many of these feminists, the late Andrea Dworkin is something of a patron saint. One well-known radfem uses a quote from Dworkin on her blog, to let it be known she is a "take no prisoners" sorta gal. I have read many, many quotes by Dworkin on Second-Wave radical feminist blogs.

But it is telling that they carefully leave out the quote(s) below, even though they claim to have all of her books.
