What Does It Mean to Sound Gay?

What Does It Mean to Sound Gay? | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it
Affect a lisp, assume a lilt, and add a fair amount of flamboyance. Presto! Instant gay man’s voice. It’s a stereotype, to be sure, but is there any truth to it? Bob Garfield and Mike Vuolo talk to Benjamin Munson, a speech scientist at the University of Minnesota, about what it means to sound gay.

Lumbersexuals: The Triumph Of The Bears

Lumbersexuals: The Triumph Of The Bears | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Bears were partly a reaction to the whole ghastly metrosexual moment when straight men, for some elusive reason, decided to shave, product and starve themselves so as to look more like women (at the behest of those Queer Eye minstrels). And exactly the same kind of hirsute transition is now – a decade later – well under way among straights.

I regard this, in the spirit of Tim Teeman, first as a huge achievement for gay male America. Not only are we more comfortable in our own unpolished masculinity, we have created a cultural space for straight men to be the same. To put it another way: gays have helped redefine masculinity for straights – and for the first time, straights have not responded by feeling in any way tainted or discomfited by the association. In the process (don’t tell anyone), the gays have craftily transformed the public space by exponentially increasing the number of men we might have a hankering or a fetish for. Win-win!

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Around the world, the 20th of November each year is set aside to remember those who have died as a result of anti-transgender hatred or prejudice.

It’s a day of reflection as we remember people we have lost. But it can also be a day of celebration, awareness and renewal, as our communities join together in solidarity and hope for a better future.

Thursday 20 November 2014 is the 16th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. The idea began in America back in the late ‘90s following the violent unsolved murder of trans woman Rita Hester, and the day is now marked in more than 20 countries across the world, including here in Australia.

The latest figures from Transgender Europe’s Trans Murder Monitoring project list 226 reported killings of trans people in the 12 months to October 2014. The update shows reports of murdered trans people in 28 countries in the last 12 months, with the majority of 113 from Brazil.

Here in Australia, a local survey by The Gender Centre in 2012 found that 51% had experienced a transphobic incident directed at themselves – either verbal abuse, physical abuse or discrimination. But only 22% had reported the incident to the authorities, as many feared their concerns would not be taken seriously, and others did not want to be ‘outed’ in a police report

How Fluid Sexuality Fits into the LGBTQIA+ Spectrum

How Fluid Sexuality Fits into the LGBTQIA+ Spectrum | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Sexuality isn’t a choice. So it may seem confusing to some when people say they don’t label their sexuality or feel that their sexuality is fluid.

But being sexually fluid doesn’t mean a person is confused. For a person to know and accept their sexuality as fluid, they must be self-aware.

This isn’t to say that there aren’t some people, like barsexuals, who use the idea of sexual fluidity to play at homosexuality without having to deal with the stigma. But this article isn’t about them.

This article is about those who identify as bi, pan, queer, no labels, genderqueer, or any other identity that goes beyond the sexual identities normally covered by “gay” and “straight”.

new study out of the University of Montréal has found that men who have sex with 20 or more partners during their lifetimes are less likely to develop prostate cancer. Could using gay dating app Grindr get you arrested in Egypt?

Dating apps with location technology add a certain excitement to nightlife in many of the world's thrumming metropolises. But in some places, they could get you arrested.

The developers of gay dating app Grindr are facing criticism from users and an American security company, as fears mount that the smartphone app might have put thousands at risk worldwide in societies where homosexuality is frowned upon or a crime by law. Germany's largest daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported Thursday that Grindr had apparently been used by Egyptian authorities to track down homosexuals -- an allegation which could not be independently verified by The Washington Post. The German newspaper points to an article published on the Web siteCairoScene as well as an interview conducted with an activist who operates a Twitter profile under the name 'GrindrMap' and has created a related Web site. Speaking to The Post, the user confirmed the authenticity of the interview and said: "It's a huge problem if Grindr runs such an infrastructure and doesn't act responsibly."

Waiting On Hollywood's LGBTQ Literacy: An Interview with Amy Sohn

Waiting On Hollywood's LGBTQ Literacy: An Interview with Amy Sohn | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

In Amy Sohn’s new novel, The Actress, a millennial starlet is explicitly cast as the girlfriend of an older, closeted gay male heartthrob. Maddy Freed, an indie actress whose star is on the rise, is invited to read for an Oscar-worthy movie role opposite Steven Weller, two decades her senior. Maddy is instantly taken with Steven, a celebrated actor with a multi-decade career.

Steven has always been ripe for tabloid fodder given the endurance of his career. But despite cycling through an array of girlfriends (and one wife) over the years, gay rumors tail him constantly. Maddy, aware of the rumors, dismisses them as such and pursues a romantic relationship anyway. But as the two actors pursue different projects and end up shooting in different locations, Steven’s gay rumors resurface again and again in the tabloids, with even Maddy second-guessing the legitimacy of their relationship.

I emailed with Amy about queer representation in the media and celebrity narratives.

List of Literary Journals for LGBTQ Writers, Women, and Writers of Color

List of Literary Journals for LGBTQ Writers, Women, and Writers of Color | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

In a previous post, I mentioned my desire to compile a list of journals and presses that exclusively focus on publishing underrepresented voices, such as women, LGBTQ writers, and writers of color. I’ve finally managed to pull something together that hopefully may prove to be a good starting point and resource for those writers who may wish to find a good home for their writing. Or maybe readers who wish to read more widely or diversely.

WHO Suggests All Gay Men Take Anti-HIV Drugs. That’s Fantastic News.

WHO Suggests All Gay Men Take Anti-HIV Drugs. That’s Fantastic News.  | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

To a casual observer, WHO’s new stance on HIV-preventing drugs (or PrEP) might look like a perpetuation of noxious anti-gay stereotypes. But whatever image problem widespread PrEP use might create is dwarfed by the HIV problem that currently plagues the gay community. HIV is, quite simply, homophobic: The risk of transmission from anal sex is 18 times higher than from vaginal penetration, and condoms break more easily during anal sex than vaginal intercourse. Combine these facts with a clearly irreversible trend toward unprotected sex among gay and bi men, and you have a better picture of the impending crisis that WHO is trying to mitigate.

This bleak picture explains why WHO and the CDC recommend PrEP for traditionally “at-risk” men—i.e., men who have sex with men without consistently using condoms. But why is WHO going a step further and advocating PrEP even for those gay and bi men who do everything right? Here, I have a rather depressing insight to offer. Since I started covering PrEP and Truvada at the beginning of this year, I’ve received messages every few weeks from gay men who ask their doctor for a prescription—and are turned down. Invariably, these men use condoms but would prefer to have a backup plan. And invariably their doctors scold them and refuse to write them a prescription.

Who's Afraid of Black Sexuality?

Who's Afraid of Black Sexuality? | Let's Get Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Well, for a long time, lots of people. Including scholars. Particularly black scholars.

If sex was once difficult to discuss openly, black sex was especially fraught. It touched on too many taboos: stereotypes and caricatures of "black Hottentots" with freakish feminine proportions; of asexual mammies or lascivious Jezebels; of hypersexual black men lusting after white women. It brought up painful memories of white control over black bodies during slavery; of rape and lynching; of Emmett Till, a teenager tortured and murdered in 1955 for supposedly flirting with a white woman
