The Long-Term Effects of Skipping Your Reading Homework | Edudemic

The Long-Term Effects of Skipping Your Reading Homework | Edudemic | Let's Educate | Scoop.it
When elementary school students have math worksheets to fill out, spelling tests to study for, after school activities to participate in, and chores to finish, it’s no wonder that the standard daily reading homework assignment can fall to the wayside.  It may seem like a small concession necessary to prioritize a busy life. After all, parents may reason, their child can catch up on reading over the weekend, over the summer, or during a less hectic time. But the effects of regularly skipping that reading homework can have long-term effect on a child’s life.

I agree that allowing students/children to skip reading homework will have an adverse effect on their lives. Teachers and parents alike need to promote reading routines that will encourage a love of reading not portray it as another boring assignment.

'Empathic Civilization': When Money No Longer Buys Happiness | Let's Educate | Scoop.it

Competition is lonely. It is good to have it between organisations. Within organisations, though, it may or may not increase productivity, but it does not increase happiness. To extol it is to make a fundamental misjudgment about human nature.

For we are born with a strongly social side to our nature (a homo empathicus), as well as a profoundly selfish side. '

Where can we start in the
building of empathy?

By the age of two many children will run and comfort another child who is hurt. We are wired up for fellow feeling -- when subjects in an experiment watch others put their hands in icy water, their own temperature falls.

50 Free Animation Tools And Resources For Digital Learners

That is education and animation working together to teach students everywhere, everything they ever wanted to know. Educators need only utilize the tools available, most of them for free.

Some of the animation links catalogued here will give educators very basic tools and histories of animation while others have the animation already created and set in motion, it’s just a matter of sharing it with students.

Educators need to decide which tool is best for them. If you want to create your own animation from scratch, then you want to go to sites such as Animwork. If you want to select from animation that’s already set up for you then perhaps Explainia makes more sense.

6 Ways to Use the Slight Edge in Your Classroom | Edudemic

6 Ways to Use the Slight Edge in Your Classroom | Edudemic | Let's Educate | Scoop.it
Will Smith once told a story from his childhood in which his father broke down the brick wall at his business and told him and his brother to rebuild it. It took them a year, but they finished the job and learned a powerful lesson contained within a memorable metaphor. He explains, “You don’t set out to build a wall. You don’t say ‘I’m going to build the biggest, baddest, greatest wall that’s ever been built.’ You don’t start there. You say, ‘I’m going to lay this brick as perfect as a brick can be laid. You do that every single day and soon you have a wall.” This story from Will Smith captures the very essence of the Slight Edge philosophy that we will discuss in this article. Applying this idea within the classroom will help students develop a strong long term sense of accomplishment that is necessary to achieve their goals.

Teaching Teachers To Teach Civility And Empathy - All Things Considered | Let's Educate | Scoop.it

A professor at the University of New Hampshire who studies school violence says teaching our students civility and empathy can help make schools safer for kids.
