The Evolving use of Badges in Education

The Evolving use of Badges in Education | Leren met ICT | Scoop.it
Rewards as a Way to Motivate Students to Learn Today’s schools commonly use grade-based evaluations where students get rewarded for the knowledge they gain.

Via Susan Bainbridge
Stacey Py Flynn's curator insight, June 16, 11:16 AM

Using virtual badges as a reward for learning provides motivation, boosts confidence and provides supports for collaborative learning through positive social interactions.

Moushira Issa's curator insight, June 16, 5:04 PM

Get recognition for learning that happens anywhere. Then share it in the places that matter.

Paula Iaeger PhD's comment, Today, 9:43 AM
This is one application of badges that cross generations and circumstances. When workers are offered recognition for the training they receive, there is a desire to know more. A simple certificate might help but a digital badge for its transportability is much better. In a classroom grades of course have their place but what I like is that the natural curiosity is rewarded when a badge is voluntarily pursued. Badges celebrate extra effort, not mediocrity and a just-get-by mentality.

Thanks for this comprehensive list. I teach via Skype and use Google hangout and Facetime with some students, friends and uni; colleagues. I don't know why more isn't made of these tools. Saves time and money. Any many of them are great for collaborative work.
Patricia Daniels's curator insight, June 8, 9:50 AM

A very comprehensive list here of video conferencing tools. I use Skype to teach English as a second language but fallback on Google Hangout and Facetime if we have any technical issues. Not that I've had any issues with Skype, but more my connection when I'm travelling.

When I've got some extra time I'm going to work my way through this list as I see there are a couple that don't require signing in, or downloading of software, which is useful when you want to communicate synchronously with people who are suspicious about logging in to any tools or who don't have the capacity for extra downloads.
