Using Twitter—But Not in the Classroom: Twitter as a Tool to Expand Classroom Conversation

Using Twitter—But Not in the Classroom: Twitter as a Tool to Expand Classroom Conversation | Aprendiendo Lenguas con TIC | Scoop.it

As a professor, one of my primary pedagogical goals is to get students to “join the conversation.” Regardless of the subject matter I am teaching, I see it as my job to show students what is currently being said about a particular topic, helping them to understand the field of study, the terms under which the dialogue is taking place. And, equally as important is encouraging them to use that base understanding to take ownership over the knowledge they have gained and to begin to participate in the ongoing dialogue around the subject matter.

UNESCO ICT Competency Framework for Teachers – Version 2.0

UNESCO’s framework emphasizes that it is not enough for teachers to have ICT competencies to be able to teach them to their students. Teachers need to be able to help students become collaborative, problem solving creative learners through using ICT so they will be effective global citizens. The Framework therefore addresses all aspects of a teacher’s work.

21st Century Skills are so last century!

21st Century Skills are so last century! | Aprendiendo Lenguas con TIC | Scoop.it

The new mantra, the next big thing, among educators who need a serious sounding phrase to rattle around in reports is ‘21st Century Skills’. I hear it often, almost always in some overlong, text-heavy, Powerpoint presentation at an educational conference, where collaboration, creativity and communication skills are in short supply.

Redefining “Cheating” With Homework | Aprendiendo Lenguas con TIC | Scoop.it

Technology is often blamed for encouraging bad behavior, particularly when it comes to academic dishonesty. There’s the notion, for example, that it’s much easier to plagiarize now thanks to the ability to copy and paste information from the Web into a term paper.

10 Tools for Increasing Engagement in Online Courses

10 Tools for Increasing Engagement in Online Courses | Aprendiendo Lenguas con TIC | Scoop.it

Over the last few years I've done a lot of work developing writing and redeveloping online courses and course materials. In the initial rush to get learning online many organisations got themselves a Moodle platform and then attached a whole load of PDFs and .docs, added some forums and the odd video clip and called it an online course. It's no surprise then that drop out rates for online learning courses have been so high.

5 Best Practices for Educators on Facebook

5 Best Practices for Educators on Facebook | Aprendiendo Lenguas con TIC | Scoop.it

Facebook has been pegged as a waste of time, a classroom disruption and a bad habit that is correlated with low grades. Missouri even went so far as to ban Facebook and other social media relationships between teachers and students (the law was later repealed).

But teachers such as Reynol Junco — who recently published a study that shows certain types of Facebook use are correlated with higher GPAs — are beginning to look at ways that they can use Facebook to their advantage.

I really enjoyed this post because it reminded me of what Facebook could be used to do to support students at risk who are too nervous to even ask questions, example through using Face book Groups. Many adminsitrators have an immediate aversion to facebook and don't see its possibilites as a learning and modertated group discussion tool.
