Organic Pollutants Now Accumulating in Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau: Scientific American

Organic Pollutants Now Accumulating in Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau: Scientific American | Legislación | Scoop.it
The accumulation of DDT in the Himalayas exceeds levels found in the Arctic

Toxic chemicals are accumulating in the ecosystems of the Himalayas and the Tibetan plateau, researchers warn in the first comprehensive study to assess levels of certain organic pollutants in that part of the world.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are carbon-based compounds that are resistant to break-down. Some originate from the burning of fuel or the processing of electronic waste, and others are widely used as pesticides or herbicides or in the manufacture of solvents, plastics and pharmaceuticals. Some POPs, such as the pesticide dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and the herbicide Agent Orange, can cause diseases such as cancers, neurological disorders, reproductive dysfunction and birth defects.

Many POPs are volatile and insoluble, and can travel a long distance. “They tend to evaporate in hot places, hitch a ride on winds, and then condense in cold regions,” says... (Click title for more)

Big Pharma Paying Out Huge Fraud Settlements

Big Pharma Paying Out Huge Fraud Settlements | Legislación | Scoop.it

The cost of doing business for big pharma is rising – dramatically. And it's not because of research and development of new blockbusters to cure cancer, alleviate pain...

Glaxo’s shares have barely moved since the Nov. 3 announcement of the huge settlement, and its shares are up more than 3% from a year ago. Merck’s shares we down 50 cents, or 1.48%, Wednesday. But that had little (if anything) to do with Tuesday’s announcement and everything to do with another broad market selloff tied to Europe’s debt crisis.

The fines levied against big pharma have gotten markedly bigger in recent years, perhaps growing in direct proportion to the industry’s desperate need to generate additional revenues. Profit growth has stalled over the past five years as, one after another, the companies have lost huge revenues as patents have expired on blockbuster drugs and competition from cheaper generic products has eaten away market share.

That loss of revenue has created intense pressure on companies like Merck, Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline to either come up with new blockbusters or wring every last nickel out of the blockbusters they still market.

Information About Original Roundup Ready® Soybean Patent Expiration

Information About Original Roundup Ready® Soybean Patent Expiration | Legislación | Scoop.it

ST. LOUIS (October 21, 2013) -- The last U.S. patent covering the original Roundup Ready® soybean trait expires in 2015. As U.S. farmers begin thinking about purchasing their soybean seed for 2014 planting, they have a new resource to answer their questions about the expiration of Monsanto’s original Roundup Ready soybean trait –soybeans.com.

“Even though the original Roundup Ready soybean trait is covered by a patent in the United States until the start of the 2015 planting season, we’re already getting questions from farmers about what they can and cannot do with Roundup Ready soybeans. Soybeans.com can help answer questions growers may have about patents as they pertain to planting and saving original Roundup Ready varieties, as well as the benefits of new seed. It’s a great resource for farmers as they plan for next year,” said Monsanto’s U.S. Oilseeds Product Management Lead Norm Sissons.

The site outlines Monsanto’s commitments regarding the original Roundup Ready trait patent expiration, explains the different patents and breeders’ rights typically covering soybean seed, and includes frequently asked questions and a decision tree on saving seed.

“We hope by having a web site like soybeans.com available, we’re able to provide a useful service to farmers and answer their questions,” said Sissons. “Soybeans.com helps give farmers a good understanding of seed patents, so they are aware of how they can legally use the seed they purchase and so they understand which seeds varieties are still protected by patents and may not be savable, including Monsanto’s second generation higher yielding soybean trait, Genuity® Roundup Ready 2 Yield®.”

“Because patent law and seed technology is complicated, figuring out which seeds can be legally saved and planted is complicated too. Soybeans.com is a good first stop for farmers who are interested in potentially saving and planting soybeans with the original Roundup Ready trait,” Sissons added. “We recommend they review soybeans.com and then visit with their local seed dealer to get more information before purchasing their seed.”

(It’s important to note that Monsanto’s newest biotech soybean trait, called Roundup Ready 2 Yield®, is protected by different patents that are not expected to expire until near the end of the next decade, so soybeans containing this higher yielding trait can’t be legally saved and planted.)

Jesús Zoco's insight:

Se explica que las semillas de una variedad de soja que presenta mayor rendimiento no puede ser guardada  y plantada por los agricultores ya que tienen una patente, por lo que no es legal.

Chimpanzees create 'social traditions': Unique handclasp grooming behavior reveals local difference

Chimpanzees create 'social traditions': Unique handclasp grooming behavior reveals local difference | Legislación | Scoop.it
Researchers have revealed that chimpanzees are not only capable of learning from one another, but also use this social information to form and maintain local traditions.

...even between chimpanzee communities that engage in the grooming handclasp, subtle yet stable differences exist in the styles that they prefer: one chimpanzee group highly preferred the style where they would grasp each other's hands during the grooming, while another group engaged much more in a style where they would fold their wrists around each other's wrists.

"We don't know what mechanisms account for these differences," van Leeuwen says. "But our study at least reveals that these chimpanzee communities formed and maintained their own local grooming traditions over the last 5 years. Our observations may also indicate that chimpanzees can overcome their innate predispositions, potentially allowing them to manipulate their environment based on social constructs rather than on mere instincts."

Apart from the different style preferences of the chimpanzee communities, the research team also observed that the grooming handclasp behaviour was a long-lasting part of the chimpanzees' behavioural repertoire: the behaviour was even transmitted to the next generation of potential handclaspers.

Via Fico Ventilatory
