In 2001, Portugal officially abolished all criminal penalties for personal possession of drugs, replacing punishment for therapy. Did it work?

12 years after Portugal removed all criminal penalties for personal possession of drugs instead focusing on rehabiliation and therepy. What happened?:

 

- Lower rates of HIV infection

- Lower rates of drug use amongst adolescents

- Number of people seeking treatment for drug addiction doubled

- Deaths related to heroin halved

 

More proof that the 'War on Drugs' has failed - it is time for a new approach.

Prescription drugs kill between about 100,000 people in the world each year, but marijuana, medical or not, has caused absolutely zero deaths.

It is simply cruel that governments deny access to and criminalise those suffering from eplipsy, multiple sclerosis and alzheimers etc., who would benefit greatly from access to medicinal marijuana.

 

Why has this not happened yet? - Among  social conservative who prefer to use scare tactics as opposed to evidence, are large pharmacutical companies who have a vested interest in keeping cannabis illegal. This is because cannabis is a superior medicine and has less side effects than the drugs that they make which aim to produce similar effects. (Read above article for more information)
