Nadya Suleman (aka "Octomom") was seen by many as the picture of irresponsibility when she had fertility treatement induced octuplets despite allegedly not being able to support the children she already had.  She became a bit of an overnight celebrity and appeared on various talk shows.  Unfortunately, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, she failed to report over $30,000 in income for these appearances while continuing to collect welfare payments.

California Welfare and Institutions Code section 10980 makes it a crime to make any "material misrepresentation" or "wilful failure to disclose information" in relation to the obtaining of public assistance benefits including welfare payments.  Due to the amount allegedly undisclosed in this case, Octomom may be looking at one or more felony convictions with a potential sentence of up to five years in prison and fines.
