Jennifer Sertl: Bringing Business and Innovation Together (Part 2)

Jennifer Sertl is a thought leader in the emerging field of corporate consciousness - the convergence of neuroscience and existential philosophy.

We have to reinforce the usefulness of being human and use technology as a tool and not a default.

I don’t think that people understand how much their own story is being told by the things they “like” and endorse. I almost wish that there was a way in which we could help them realize that you know, of all these things that you’re “liking” on Facebook and all these different things you’re endorsing, is this truly who you are?”

ozziegontang's insight:

Communication is about our humanity. Communication is our humanity.

Like Lee, Jennifer looks at what it means to be human and the impact that has on our lives.  With our technologies we can easily forget that our humanity is about our thinking and the interpretations that we come up with. As the closest we will get to reality is our "interpretation" of it.

So it is about our thinking, and the choices or decisions we make based upon our interpretations.

So what does it mean to be human? And how do we use technology as a tool rather than a god we pay homage to.

ozziegontang's insight:

The derivation of corporation is from the Latin 'corpus': body. When we have friends and guests over to our homes we say: We're having company over.

Susan Scott when writing Fierce Conversations was given the suggestion of writing a book about conversations at work and another one on conversations outside of work. Her answer was a question: When you squeeze an orange at work or at home what do you get?

Jennifer Sertl reminds us that we create our world and then our world creates us. In the process, she reminds us that our thinking and the recognition of our humanity and all that encompasses are the foundation upon which we build our futures. The task of business is to maintain this awareness of its human foundation. It is keeping the heart, the soul, our human consciousness in corporate life.

In a body all our organs from skin to brain, heart, and lungs each have their important role to play for that body to function well. Every role in a corporation has an important role to play for that corporation to function well.

If we treat our visiting guests and relatives as company; how does it benefit a company to treat its employees as family?

A person imagines what is possible. We call that a Vision. When that Vision is strong enough it inspires the person who had it to share. When it gains enought energy, its numinosity is so overpowering that now the Vision has the leader and her followers.

The work is around creating alignment  between corporations and the people in them. A consciousness that body, mind, and spirit are unified and one.

Our thinking has been able to separate the parts to better understand the human condition. Now the realization is that the separation was an abstraction and being human is not.
