Using the PageVisibility API - HTML5 Rocks

As Web developers, we tend to get excited by new technologies that enable us to create ever more engaging, interactive Web pages. 3D graphics with WebGL? Absolutely. Advanced audio capabilities with WebAudio? Sure thing. Real-time collaboration applications using the Web camera and microphone? Sign me up! Less exciting, though equally important, are the technologies that allow us to build applications that run more efficiently and provide a better overall user experience. This is where an API like PageVisibility comes in. The Page Visibility API performs a simple but important function – it lets your application know when a page is visible to the user. This basic piece of information enables the creation of Web pages that behave differently when they are not being viewed.

Data attributes rock – as both CSS and JavaScript know them | Christian Heilmann

Currently my better half Kasia is working on a JavaScript training course and wanted to explain the concepts of JavaScript with a game. So we sat down and did a simple game example whilst she was fretting over the structure of the course. As she wanted to explain how to interact with the DOM in JavaScript rather than using Canvas we had some fun using CSS animation in conjunction with simple keyboard controls. More on the game in due time, but here is a quick thing we found to be extremely useful and not really used enough in the wild – the interplay of data attributes, CSS and changing states.

Windows 8 and Microsoft Surface: IE10 meets modern mobile HTML5 , is your website ready ? | Lectures web | Scoop.it
October 26th 2012 is the big day for Microsoft: the launch of Windows 8, Internet Explorer 10 and the Microsoft’s tablet: the Surface. From an OS and an HTML5 point of view, it’s a really big step for Microsoft and for all web developers (even non-mobile) . Let’s review what’s important for us.

I will start with some bad news: you need to go and prepare your websites for the new ecosystem.

Even if you have only a desktop-optimized website, you need to go and prepare it. And if you are thinking: “hey, this will not affect my mobile site because it’s just for tablets” you are wrong.
