A Flipped Classroom? Or Should It Be Sideways? | Edudemic | For the Flipped Out | Scoop.it

Since it is a less radical departure from what students and parents expect, there’s less stress and uncertainty. If you fear that students may not have access to video lectures or get distracted from learning while on their own time, then teacher resources and equipment available in most schools solve this logistics problem. Wealth and home situation do not become a barrier to learning.

Research: How Video Production Affects Student Engagement

edX recently commissioned a study of nearly 1,000 videos, segmenting them out by by video type and production style, and discovered this among their other findings:

Shorter videos are more engaging. Engagement drops after 6 minutes.Videos with a more personal feeling are more effective than high-fidelity studio recordings.
Videos in which the instructor speaks quickly and with high enthusiasm are more engaging.Khan-style tablet drawings are more engaging than power point slides.

What’s the Difference Between a Flipped Classroom and Flipped Learning?

What’s the Difference Between a Flipped Classroom and Flipped Learning? | For the Flipped Out | Scoop.it

Why do I characterize this explanation as a flipped classroom and not flipped learning? Because, contrary to popular belief, these terms are not synonymous. Yet nearly every article written on these topics mistakenly equates them.

Wort looking at the four pillars of F-L-I-P

Flexible Environment:

 F.1: I establish spaces and time frames that permit students to interact and reflect on their learning as needed.  F.2: I continually observe and monitor students to make adjustments as appropriate. F.3: I provide students with different ways to learn content and demonstrate mastery.

Learning Culture:

 L.1: I give students opportunities to engage in meaningful activities without the teacher being central.  L.2: I scaffold these activities and make them accessible to all students through differentiation and feedback.

Intentional Content:

 I.1: I prioritize concepts used in direct instruction for learners to access on their own.  I.2: I create and/or curate relevant content (typically videos) for my students.  I.3: I differentiate to make content accessible and relevant to all students.

Professional Educator:

 P.1: I make myself available to all students for individual, small-group and class feedback, in real time, as needed.  P.2: I conduct ongoing formative assessments during class time through observation and by recording data to inform future instruction. P.3: I collaborate and reflect with other educators and take responsibility for transforming my practice.

Blended Learning Model Definitions | Christensen Institute

Blended Learning Model Definitions | Christensen Institute | For the Flipped Out | Scoop.it

The definition of blended learning is a formal education program in which a student learns:

(1) at least in part through online learning, with some element of student control over time, place, path, and/or pace;

(2) at least in part in a supervised brick-and-mortar location away from home;

(3) and the modalities along each student’s learning path within a course or subject are connected to provide an integrated learning experience.

Peter B. Sloep's curator insight, April 12, 3:41 PM

The focus of these scoop.it pages is networked learning. As the above definition points out, online learning is part and parcel of blended learning experiences. In some cases, the online part is of a social nature, thereby qualifying it as a form of networked learning. Apart from that, next to MOOCs blended learning is another attempt at marrying the online and the offline in learning. Although the terminology used is different, although the intentions are different (for sure if it concerns xMOOCs), there are a lot of similarities worth drawing attention to. This is particularly so since the various forms of blended learning discussed in this short scoop offer useful food for thought for those interested in furthering the evolution of MOOCs. I am thinking in particular of the à-la-carte model and the enriched-virtual model. Also, the classification is unlikely to be exhaustive and therefore provides food for the imaginative thinker.
