Time to stop avoiding grammar rules

Time to stop avoiding grammar rules | LearningTeachingTeachingLearning | Scoop.it

The evidence is now in: explicit teaching of grammar leads to better learning...

Nicola: The most interesting bit of this article is the comment section after it. No one falls for Catherine Walter's piece of propaganda cum advertising and she probably does the cause more harm than good.

Via Silvana Richardson, Connie Baques
Linda Buckmaster's curator insight, January 12, 12:26 AM

At the beginning  I assess students knowledge of SPAG (spelling, punctuation and grammar).  "What are plurals?"...  no response.

"Here is one lady and here is another; what would you have?"

 "Trouble!", shouted a young gent.

Of course everyone burst out laughing including myself, but sadly not one was able to give a correct answer.

"We did this in school, why are we doing it again?"

"Yes you did.  Now we are simply reviewing to build and expand upon your previous knowledge."

We generally then review the rules and examples to incoporate into that session/topic.

I am extremely pleased to hear that concrete evidence of teaching leads to better learning has been published.

" The worst part about it is that the technology world moves so fast and changes so rapidly that the jargon and slang is extremely hard to keep up with, even for people who try to pay close attention.

So today I thought I’d bring you a mini-encyclopedia or mini-dictionary of sorts, where I’ll lay out some of the more confusing technology terms that educators will encounter on a regular basis. I’ll do my best to explain them as well, so you can at least sound knowledgeable if you are, say, stuck in a conversation with someone who knows a lot about technology. Here we go!..."
