LLZ Uni Halle's curator insight, July 31, 12:27 AM

"(...) There are two important conclusions from the research: 1. Even for the sole purpose for which lectures may be effective – the transmission of information – the 50 minute lecture needs to be well organized, with frequent opportunities for student questions and discussion. (Bligh provides excellent suggestions on how to do this in his book.) 2. For all other important learning activities, such as developing critical thinking, deep understanding, and application of knowledge – the kind of skills needed in a digital age – lectures are ineffective. Other forms of teaching and learning – such as opportunities for discussion and student activities – are necessary. (...)"

A round-up of interactive video options

A round-up of interactive video options | learning design | Scoop.it

"We take for granted that we can interact with text, but up until recently it’s been a challenge to interact (read/write/talk) with media...

Being able to interact with video allows us to personalize video-based instruction, by leading learners to the segment of video we like them to watch, by adding voice-overs, notes, pop-ups, screenshots, maps, references, pauses. It also allows learners to create video with even more depth and features and can the interaction can be used to support media literacy learning."

A good overview on the available tools to make video interactive.

Alfredo Corell's curator insight, July 23, 4:38 AM
  • Created for educators, EDpuzzle allows teachers to set up classes, to assign specific video lessons and to engage students in creating their own video lessons.  Analytics share which students watch, when they last watched, and whether they watched at home or at school.
  •  Mozilla PopcornMaker is a powerful multiple-layer video editor that invites users to remix videos to include pop-ups, text boxes, images, maps (even in streetview), as well as Wikipedia articles that continue to update.
  • ThingLink for video,  looks so promising.
  • eduCanon is an interactive learning platform into which teachers may embed questions and any html object.
  • TED-Ed lessons offer educators the opportunity to customize a TED video to meet their specific instructional needs.
  • Write-on Video is an iPad app that allows users to annotate and animate videos and pictures, by arranging the elements into storyboards and slideshows enhanced by free-hand drawing, text boxes, stamps, and sound clips.

A new report from the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project finds that online video is growing. 78% of online adults watch or download videos online, up from 69% in 2009, and the share of internet users who upload or post video online has doubled from 14% in 2009 to 31% today. Kristen Purcell, report author, explains these findings and the reasons behind them.

Mentoring Instead of Teaching: A Paradigm Shift

Mentoring Instead of Teaching: A Paradigm Shift | learning design | Scoop.it
By: Dawn Casey-Rowe Teachers give homework. Mentors change lives. If schools replaced teachers with mentors, classrooms would be revolutionized forever. This isn’t semantics – it’s a paradigm shift...

As we redesign schools, we have a unique opportunity to find practices that work and use them. Mentoring is one of those practices. I don’t want to be a teacher anymore. Teachers give tests and assign homework.

I want to be a mentor. I want to support students as they create the masterpieces that will be their lives.

I can only do this if we make school less about the test and more about the mission–treating students like the unique individuals they are with gifts that will change the world.

The Rice Process's curator insight, May 26, 3:26 PM

Excellent insights! The mentor/student relationship is a significant part of the learning process for all students at all stages of their education. A mentor is more than a teacher or advisor. A mentor accompanies the student on their personal journey, advising and giving feedback along the way. Many students--either consciously or unconsciously--crave additional guidance from educators, but may not know how to seek out that guidance.  Mentoring programs--in which students can talk to teachers or other educational mentors in a setting that is less formal than the classroom--provide a structured opportunity for students to do this. A well-planned and executed mentoring program could help define goals and means for students to stay on track, learn and grow.

Ness Crouch's curator insight, May 30, 8:33 PM

I must agree completely with this article. There must be a clear shift within classrooms to allow students to access their learning in more efficient was. Sadly however most parents do not have an understanding of this idea and therefore may have opposition to their children learning from their own experiences with the teacher supporting them along the way.
