Building Good Search Skills: What Students Need to Know

Building Good Search Skills: What Students Need to Know | learning21andbeyond | Scoop.it

The Internet has made researching subjects deceptively effortless for students — or so it may seem to them at first. Truth is, students who haven’t been taught the skills to conduct good research will invariably come up short.

Crowdsourcing in Your Classroom | Thoughtful Learning

Crowdsourcing in Your Classroom | Thoughtful Learning | learning21andbeyond | Scoop.it

By Smith

"How can you shift your classroom away from lecture and toward inquiry? You can get help from the modern phenomenon known as crowdsourcing—the practice of putting many minds to work on a single problem. Inquiry is, in effect, crowdsourcing in your classroom.

"The following four concepts from crowdsourcing can help you use more inquiry in your classroom."

A few good scoops for us « NeverEndingSearch | learning21andbeyond | Scoop.it

I’ve been talking a lot about curating for and with students lately. As the curation movement gets stickier, more and more librarians and educators are joining.

So I tasked my very able practicum student Chrissy Sirianni to help me pick some Scoop.its to share, offering a taste of the kind of current awareness the tool provides for school library professionals.

60 Second Recap: Valuable Video Resource for ALL Students of Literature |

60 Second Recap: Valuable Video Resource for ALL Students of Literature | | learning21andbeyond | Scoop.it

"If you are a student or teacher of literature, and you aren’t already familiar with this resource, you owe it to yourself to check it out. For effective learning to occur in any classroom, it’s essential that information be presented in multiple formats. It’s just as important to offer a range of options for engagement. This site helps beautifully on both counts.

60 Second Recap is a web based resource, and an iOS app, that uses short video clips to introduce great literature in a manner that I suspect most learners find highly engaging. Each clip is well researched and skilfully written. Production quality is exceptional. The target audience may be high school students, but these videos completely engage this learner, and I haven’t been a high school student for more than 40 years!"

PBL Series… Driving Questions: Students Uncovering Amazing Content Through Inquiry

PBL Series… Driving Questions: Students Uncovering Amazing Content Through Inquiry | learning21andbeyond | Scoop.it

"I really like Driving Questions. In fact, I like them so much more then Essential Questions. You might ask why? I think it just might be my affection for the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. You may remember that in the revision the different levels were changed into action. In fact, I strongly believe that learning is a verb and is based on action. Take away the word “Question” and Driving is a verb loaded with action. The word “Essential” standing alone is only a word devoted to describing… a colorful but inactive adjective."

This is the first article of a series and discusses the concept of Driving Questions and how their importance in PBL. Links to additional resources are also available.
