Can Gamification Help Struggling Students?

Can Gamification Help Struggling Students? | Learning Trends | Scoop.it

"If you aren’t familiar with the idea of gamification, be prepared to thank the Millennials for its inclusion in almost everything. Gamification involves bringing in traits traditionally associated with video games and using them to engage people in other activities. The principle has been used in everything from employee engagement efforts to healthcare objectives about customer wellness. And the educational system is not excluded from attempts to gamify previously uninspiring activities."

Co-Teaching Cultivates Our Critical Thinking | #ModernEDU | Learning Trends | Scoop.it

Critical Thinking and Students

Designing instruction that fosters critical thinking skills is a necessary part of our instructional process. We must make sure to proactively differentiate the learning to guide our students through a variety of levels of understanding.

Bloom’s Taxonomy has stood the test of time to empower our own thinking and reflective practices. Specifically the revised taxonomy and questioning techniques continue to guide teachers to evolve with the times to support learning through carefully designing and meaningful active learning for everyone.
Check out Literacy is Not Enough to think about applying the important skills of problem solving, creativity, collaboration, analytical thinking, ethics, action, and accountability (Crockett, Jukes, & Churches, 2011).

Now let’s make a shift. Think about how critical thinking skills could transform the process of co-teaching!

Let’s take a few mindful moments to realize the opportunities for your own critical thinking evolution.

Lessons Learned From Great Schools Around the World

Lessons Learned From Great Schools Around the World | Learning Trends | Scoop.it

Much has been written recently about the differences between education systems around the world, but much less has been said about what excellent schools around the world have in common. Over the past year, I’ve visited top-ranked schools across four continents and met an extremely diverse array of school leaders. Amid this diversity, I was surprised when each leader described the same three priorities as fundamental to their schools’ success. From Singapore to Switzerland, South Africa to India, these three practices recurred with remarkable consistency.

Being able to listen with focus and empathy is key, whereby those in our care feel supported and heard. In a world where everyone is so busy and time often seems to be the commodity that we have the least of, this diagram really serves to remind us that we need to listen constructively, suggest skilfully and try to understand the emotion of those we are engaging with in all that we do. Purposeful listening rather than just hearing is key.

Developing the digital literacies of academic staff: an institutional approach | Newland | Research in Learning Technology | Learning Trends | Scoop.it

For each literacy, there is an explanation of what the literacy is, why it is important and how to gain it, with links to resources and training opportunities. After an initial pilot, the DLF website was launched in the summer of 2014. This paper discusses the strategic context and policy development of the DLF, its initial conception and subsequent development based on a pilot phase, feedback and evaluation. It critically analyses two of the ways that engagement with the DLF have been promoted: (1) formal professional development schemes and (2) the use of a ‘School-based’ approach. It examines the successes and challenges of the University of Brighton’s scheme and makes some suggestions for subsequent steps including taking a course-level approach.

[PDF] The new Learning Economy and the rise of the Working Learner | Learning Trends | Scoop.it

"Until recently, we thought of learning, working, and living as separate parts of our lives. In our younger years we went to school.  We spent our adult years working, and wove in personal events into the time that remained.  Now imagine a world where all of this has changed. In the not so distant future, working, learning, and living will become increasingly inseparable, not by choice, but in order to thrive in a rapidly evolving learning economy."
