The World’s Largest Repository of Free Online Learning Tutorials

The World’s Largest Repository of Free Online Learning Tutorials | Wikispaces, blogs, VLEs, PLNs where to next? | Scoop.it

Here’s a common scenario. Someone emails and asks about an elearning tutorial I have on the blog. It’s not always easy to find the specific tutorial buried in a given post. In fact, there are many times I either forgot that I had created that tutorial or I can’t recall where it’s at either. I know. It’s part of getting older.

Today I am going to fix that. I have listed every blog post that has a video tutorial that shows how to create something related to online learning. So, if you’re just getting started with building online learning courses (or new to the blog), now you have a handy resource with links to all sorts of rapid elearning tutorials.

Spritz - An Amazing Reading Tool

"Spritz’s mission is to change the way people read and make communication faster, easier, and more effective."

Beth Dichter's curator insight, August 17, 9:09 PM

Spritz is a digital tool that allows you to read one word at a time and you can set the speed. You read the "text one word at a time in our “redicle,” a special visual frame we designed for reading."

Words can be read starting at 100 words per minute up to 1000 words per minute.
Spritz will work English, Spanish, French, German, Russian and Korean. More languages will be added.

This tool is worth looking at because it may help some students who struggle with reading. The text has to be accessible online and does work on many platforms. For more information head over to the website.

Want to innovate? Become a "now-ist"

Want to innovate? Become a "now-ist" | Wikispaces, blogs, VLEs, PLNs where to next? | Scoop.it
“Remember before the internet?” asks Joi Ito. “Remember when people used to try to predict the future?” In this engaging talk, the head of the MIT Media Lab skips the future predictions and instead shares a new approach to creating in the moment: building quickly and improving constantly, without waiting for permission or for proof that you have the right idea. This kind of bottom-up innovation is seen in the most fascinating, futuristic projects emerging today, and it starts, he says, with being open and alert to what’s going on around you right now. Don’t be a futurist, he suggests: be a now-ist.

Teaching Students Skills to become Better Online Readers

Teaching Students Skills to become Better Online Readers | Wikispaces, blogs, VLEs, PLNs where to next? | Scoop.it

Soon after Maryanne Wolf published “Proust and the Squid,” a history of the science and the development of the reading brain from antiquity to the twenty-first century, she began to receive letters from readers. Hundreds of them. While the backgrounds of the writers varied, a theme began to emerge: the more reading moved online, the less students seemed to understand."

Reading on line...a good habit? Here to stay?

Helen Teague's curator insight, August 3, 9:36 AM
Do students retain more information when they read from books rather than from digital devices? Does reading online present challenges due to distractions? Do students need to be taught skills to become better online readers?
Ruby Day's curator insight, August 3, 5:21 PM

Studies show we are not reading as effectively online as we are with hard copies. This highlights the need for tools to help us read deeper online - e.g annotation type tools. This links to an interesting stuy of year 5 students using collaborative annotation software demonstrating higher performance than the control group's' paper based annotation.

The 6 Types Of Assessments (And How They're Changing) - Edudemic | Wikispaces, blogs, VLEs, PLNs where to next? | Scoop.it

Testing, especially any sort of standardized testing tends to get a bad rap. Teachers complain that they spend too much time teaching to a test. But assessments do have value, and an important place in our learning structure. By measuring what students are learning, we as teachers can look at how we are approaching different subjects, materials, and even different students. The handy infographic takes a look at different types of assessments and their attributes and questions. Keep reading to learn more.

"In their attempts to establish a 1:1 program for the year 6 class, St Oliver Plunket has recently held a series of workshops in order to develop their students skills before they were officially given management of their very own devices.

The workshops were particularly centered around teaching students about some tips and tricks for managing their iPad, email etiquette, successful searching and copyright and creative commons. I personally was thrilled by the efforts these people from St Oliver are putting into making their 1:1 program a success and I hope other schools would do the same."

Instead of putting on a video and relaxing, why not put in a quiz or some questions.......
Kelly Christopherson's curator insight, August 20, 2:37 PM

I like the idea of being able to insert questions and comments into videos that will be used with students, either large group or individual. It provides for formative quick checks to ensure students are on track and can generate discussions amongst groups or with the whole class. I also think that, giving students this option, they could create reactions by asking questions and direct their own learning through adding questions or comments to what they are viewing.
