Children and parents in Bosnia protesting against discrimination ...

Bosnian Muslim children and parents come from Konjevic polje (eastern Republika Srpska) to demand the authorities to allow children in RS to attend classes in their native language and learn in the so-called national ...
Edin Ibric's insight:

This was an interesting find that speaks to a few of my earlier scoops. In this article it describes how Bosnian Muslim parents of children attending schools in a primarily Bosnian Serb area are protesting by keeping their children home from school. What they're protesting about is that they want to have their schools teach in the Bosnian language rather then Serbian. Since I never attended school in Bosnia as a child I always assumed that the language used at schools in Bosnia was actually Bosnian. My personal feeling toward this issue is confusion really because I know how similar the languages are but if the region is in Bosnia it would make more sense to me to have the students learning in Bosnian.

English to Bosnian Translation, engleski prijevod

Free online English-Bosnian translation. Translate English to Bosnian free on our world star Bosnian translators... Besplatne online englesko-bosanski prijevod. Prevedi engleski bosanskim besplatno na naše bosanske prevoditelja...
Edin Ibric's insight:

Translation software and websites are tools that I’m not too familiar with but I’ve been starting to examine some of these resources a bit more closely and I’ve found them to work quite well. I wasn’t sure what to expect when testing out this particular English to Bosnian translator. My first thought was that it would mess up some words and I might get a good laugh at the word combinations that it would create but I was mistaken. This translator works really well and I even tried inputting more complex phrases into it and it still managed to spit out the correct Bosnian translation. Even though the translator works well, the site is awful to look at.  At first I couldn’t figure out how it worked or what to do with it because the ads and other items are so busy on the page it was hard to make out what was advertising and what was actually part of the translator.

Learn Romanian & Bosnian (In-App) by WAGmob

Get Learn Romanian & Bosnian (In-App) by WAGmob on the App Store. See screenshots and ratings, and read customer reviews.
Edin Ibric's insight:

I was curious to see what kind of apps were available for mobile devices to learn Bosnian and I found this one on itunes. The app is combined with Romanian, which I thought was a little strange to have the two languages in one app. I don’t speak Romanian so I’m not sure how similar it is to Bosnian, I would have thought that they would have put Croatian and Serbian together with Bosnian for this app.  The app contains a variety of phrase books that you can call upon for most situations. It also contains some learning games that are similar to the ones I wrote about in a different scoop where you match or identify words, numbers and colours. The app seems to be quite popular judging from the amount of users listed.

Bosnian language learning games

Learn Bosnian language with free to use and fun online games. Suitable for kids and language learners at different levels. Includes a study guide for learning Bosnian language online.
Edin Ibric's insight:

I have spent a lot of time trying to find game based learning tools for learning Bosnian. It was quite difficult to find anything really sophisticated or engaging. Most of the learning games function well but really don’t look very appealing, which may turn away some learners. The games listed on this site are basic matching games that teach you how to say numbers, colours, animals and other simple items. I’m finding most of the learning games for learning languages are pretty much like these and that worries me a little. I would really like to see some language learning games that are much more immersive and actually have some meaningful interactions to better prepare learners in learning a new language.

Edin Ibric's insight:

While looking for Bosnian language learning tools I came across this site, which contains many different language lessons and courses. It also has a comparison chart that reviews and rates the top 10 language learning software available. I thought it was an extremely valuable resource to allow people to see the pros and cons between each software package. According to the chart listed, Speed Learning Languages is the number one language learning software with Berlitz at number 10 on the list. I thought this would be a good link to include for anyone that may be interested in these programs. This site could be very helpful when choosing the appropriate software for personal language learning needs.

TV Slon-Local TV
from Tuzla.
Edin Ibric's insight:

This was a really interesting find. This link brought me to a huge list of television feeds from many different countries. Most importantly it brought me to a Bosnian local TV broadcast from Tuzla. In the movie that is being shown in this link you’ll find an English speaking character that is thrown in the middle of the war in Bosnia and she’s trying to communicate with some of the soldiers with a translator. I really think this is a great way to help reinforce some of the other resources I’ve posted mainly because you get to see many characters interacting and speaking the language with the appropriate rhythm and other items related to speaking a language.

Edin Ibric's insight:

This site is definitely a great resource that links to several different places that can help you learn or explore the Bosnian language as well as experience some of it’s culture first hand. It gives you a brief description of how the language came to be and explains some useful information about the language in general. The links really impressed me, especially the ones that take you to live television and radio streams.

Useful Bosnian phrases

A collection of useful phrases in Bosnian.
Edin Ibric's insight:

When I came across this web page I wasn’t sure if I was going to use it at first but after spending some time on it I did find it quite useful. There is a large list of useful phrases that are well organized and easy to follow. My favorite part is for every phrase or word listed in English, it gives you the Bosnian translation but includes how to say it formally and informally as well as how to say it if you were speaking to a man or a woman. The variations are subtle but quite important to point out so you don’t offend someone by saying the wrong way.

What is the difference between Bosnian, Serbian and Croatian?

What is the difference between Bosnian, Serbian and Croatian? | Learning to Speak Bosnian Using Online Tools and Resources | Scoop.it
So one day at work i got into chating with a truck driver, and he asks me where im i from, and of course i always have fun with this i asked him what do you think? He says Bosnia. I asked him why do you assume im bosnian?
Edin Ibric's insight:

Since I know there are so many similarities between Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian I decided to look for information on the differences between the three languages. I found this short article that gets to the point very quickly. The author of this article claims that Bosnian isn’t really a language and there is only “serb-o-croatian”. This seems to be a very heated topic for some people judging from all the comments from people who have read the article and disagree. Personally I’ve always known Bosnian to be a real language mainly because I grew up with all my family telling me that we come from Bosnia and speak Bosnian. It was a little strange to hear the author say Bosnian isn’t actually a language. Basically I didn’t really learn what I wanted to learn from this article but it made me think about whether or not Bosnian is actually a language and it’s motivated me to find out more information on the topic.

Check out all the word lists and phrases of Bosnian category created by language learners just like you!
Edin Ibric's insight:

I haven’t heard about byki until I read about it in a the UYC’s Guide: 5 Tips To Learn a Foreign Language blog page. I was interested to see what they offered for people interested in learning Bosnian since the UYC blog mentioned that Rosetta Stone didn’t offer Bosnian. Byki looks very substantial in my opinion, it seems to have a variety of options to help you learn whether you’re on the go and need an app for your tablet or phone, it seems to be available too suit whatever your needs are.

The software has a wide range of learning materials that can help with pronounciation, grammer, writing as well as items to help build your vocabulary. I really like that there is a free version that you can download to try out and get you started. There is also a huge community on their website that have created their own resources to help you learn and practice the language using a wide variety of methods synchronously or asynchronously. This is a very valuable tool for learning languages.

Bosnian Language and Culture

This blog will feature various articles on the language, literature and culture. Share your thoughts!
Edin Ibric's insight:

Since the Bosnian language is so incredibly similar to other languages in near by countries I wanted to see if I can find find some information on the differences between the former Yugoslavian languages. I came across this interesting blog where the author explains some of the similarities and differences between these languages. It goes on to explain that the languages in the area all go by different names depending on the “ethnic variances and rivalries”. I thought this was very fascinating because knowing Bosnian, I’ve had no trouble communicating with Croatians or Serbians in the past yet the languages are all named differently and sound alike except for minor differences. The blog goes on to describe in detail some of the differences in pronunciations and sounds that letter combinations make and how they differ between the languages. This was a very interesting find for me because it allows me to understand the differences between the languages with much more clarity.

This online course for learning Bosnian looks very good. It goes into an extensive amount of detail in so many areas of the language and the main lessons are done using Skype where you learn from a professional native Bosnian speaking tutor.  What I can say I didn’t like about the site is that the link to video lessons takes you to a page that has video lessons in Albanian. So far I haven’t had very much luck in finding actual Bosnian learning videos but I will continue my research.

Bosnian Video Lesson

This page contains a video lesson in Bosnian where you can improve your comprehension and understanding of the Bosnian sample text also called Bosniac.
Edin Ibric's insight:

I was quite glad to see some video lessons for learning Bosnian listed on this website. When I clicked on the link to browse the available videos I noticed it says that it’s Bosnian lessons but the videos actually say “Croatian 101”. Since the languages are so similar it’s not a terrible thing but I found while watching the videos many of the phrases being said were using words that were very specific to the Croatian language. The site is a bit misleading and it has motivated me to see if I can find an actual series of Bosnian language learning videos online.

Here’s a resource that I’m quite skeptical about but I really wouldn’t mind trying it to see if it is possible. According to this page it states that with their program you can learn to speak Bosnian while you sleep and it will only take thirty days! They also mention that the method they use too teach languages is how spies are trained in acquiring new languages. This definitely seems a little far-fetched but it would be interesting to see if it proves to have the results they are claiming.

Now this was an amazing discovery for me while researching different resources to help people learn Bosnian. I was a little surprised I didn’t come across this link much sooner but I am quite glad I found it nonetheless.  Here we’ll find information on a book called Bosnian for Foreigners, which is written by Dr. Midhat Ridjanovic who is a professor of English and linguistics at the University of Sarajevo. The book is a "grammatical investigation of the language now called by four different names (Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin, Serbian)".  From some of the excerpts from the book it describes the differences or variants of the languages which is very valuable information for me as I continue to research the topic.

Edin Ibric's insight:

Since I’ve been uncovering a lot of debate whether or not Bosnian is a language or not, I turned my attention to find out the truth. I found a resource that answered many of the questions and concerns I had with regards to Bosnian as a language. This site has a lot of information the clarifies many things, it states that, “The Bosnian language is accepted by The UN, UNESCO, and many other linguistic agencies and government bodies as a distinct language.” Finding this detailed web page, full of all kinds of information about Bosnian has put a lot of concerns I had at ease. It also contains many different examples of how the language developed based on evidence that dates back to the 10th and 11th centuries.

Learn Bosnian Online

Edin Ibric's insight:

I wasn’t too impressed with this site at first but as I explored it further I found some good tools to learn basic words and phrases. What actually turned me off when I first looked at this site was the design and layout of the page. It doesn’t look pretty, which makes me think it’s a really old site that needs some updating or it’s just something that was thrown together in a hurry. With that said, what I really liked was the simple games available to help learn numbers, colours and other basic items. I would recommend this more for kids that may want to learn the language, like my nine year old daughter who has recently shown interested in learning Bosnian. This page seems like it will be a really good place for her to begin.

It definitely is a basic site on all fronts but when you do sample the games and other resources they work very well and are good enough to give you a starting point in learning the language.

FunkyBosnian.com - Learn Bosnian phrases to impress your loved one and Bosnian friends | Learning to Speak Bosnian Using Online Tools and Resources | Scoop.it
Edin Ibric's insight:

This site was an interesting find while looking for some online language learning tools. What this particular resource focuses on is helping you learn everyday expressions used by Bosnians. It basically allows you to get “the gist” of what you need to know to be able to communicate with Bosnians on a day-to-day basis.

It’s divided into sections and each section gives you a series of phrases or expressions to learn how to say in Bosnian. Some examples of the phrases are; “How are you?” and “I am starving.” You can listen to an audio file of the expression to help you with pronunciation and other aspects of learning how to say the expression in Bosnian. There is also a little exam at the end of each section to test your progress. As interesting as the resource is, it doesn’t appear to be much help for deeper conversational needs of the language.

UYC’S GUIDE: 5 TIPS TO LEARN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Edin Ibric's insight:

This was one of the first sites that I found when I started to search for tools and other resources that can help people learn Bosnian and in my case brush up on my Bosnian. What I really liked about this article is how the author decided to start off with a “do-it-yourself” approach to learning the language but soon discovered that she wasn’t progressing fast enough. She lists some great methods and resources that have helped her out with learning the language. She explains how Rosetta Stone didn’t have Bosnian yet so she found Byki which has many more languages available. Ultimately this was a great source of information to see what the author discovers as she is trying to learn to speak Bosnian and the best part is her reason for wanting to learn the language and that is because she’s marrying a Bosnian gentleman and wants to learn his native language.
