Developing Leaders: Lessons from One of the Most Impressive Behavior Change Efforts Ever | Catalyze Associates

Developing Leaders: Lessons from One of the Most Impressive Behavior Change Efforts Ever | Catalyze Associates | Learning to lead | Scoop.it

What can a (stunning) program to feed starving children possibly teach us about developing stronger leaders?  Introducing the Elephant, and other takeaways.

Learning for Development (L4D)'s insight:

Interesting case study from Vietnam that critiques mainstream approaches to behavioural change communication and knowledge sharing. However, if I may add my two cents worth, the story does risk sending a message that it takes just one (expatriate) man and six months to make a lasting difference on the ground!

Sustainability: Why Leadership Matters · Blog · INTRAC | Learning to lead | Scoop.it

It is not only the "business model" of NGOs that needs to keep up with changing times, their leaders must adapt as well.

Learning for Development (L4D)'s insight:

Politicians are often derided for being out of touch with their constituencies and for clinging on to power at all costs. This article argues that non-governmental organizations too need to adjust their leadership as they mature: from visionary, to managerial to transformational, in order to remain effective and accountable to their core mission of facilitating inclusive and sustainable change.

Who's in charge here?: A literature review of approaches to leadership in humanitarian operations

Who's in charge here?: A literature review of approaches to leadership in humanitarian operations | Learning to lead | Scoop.it
This paper is the result of an extensive literature review, which considered documentation from international humanitarian organisations and from other fields, such as civil defence, the military, and emergency medicine (see Annex A for methodology). It considers some of the assumptions that we commonly make around operational leadership, and investigates the potential relevance of alternative approaches to leadership, and how they might be implemented in the international humanitarian system. In so doing, the paper creates some broad hypotheses, which we intend to test ‘in the field’, and in collaboration with members of the ALNAP network. As such, this paper is part of a process that aims to ensure that investments in improving the effectiveness of humanitarian leadership achieve the greatest possible impact.

How To Build A Boundaryless Organization

How To Build A Boundaryless Organization | Learning to lead | Scoop.it

Unlocking human potential is the new competitive advantage. But it’s not as simple as expressing good intentions at the top. And it’s not enough to proclaim, “our people are our most important assets.” Every leader must do the hard work of breaking down boundaries and rethinking the most deeply held assumptions about work. It’s the difference between winning and losing in the future.

Leadership Transformation for Development Effectiveness in Africa | Africa Platform for Development Effectiveness

The Enablers and Disablers of Leadership for Transformational Change in Africa is a report that outlines the methodology and results of a Pilot Study conducted in Tanzania by the Albert Luthuli Centre for Responsible Leadership (ALCRL) in partnership with the Institute of African Leadership for Sustainable Development (Uongozi Institute). The report starts from the perspective that most research on leadership in Africa to date originates not from African Academics but from outside the continent.

Learning for Development (L4D)'s insight:

The report describes a research methodology developed for the project that was tested and refined by application to case studies of transformational change in Tanzania as a basis to identify enablers and disablers of leadership.

Leadership Webinar Series | Leadership Learning Community

Leadership Webinar Series | Leadership Learning Community | Learning to lead | Scoop.it

June 3 webinar will discuss "Systematic Civic Stewardship: An Organizing Model for Leading Change in the Social Sector"

Learning for Development (L4D)'s insight:

Event summary: Cities are becoming the most prominent context for social change in the world today, and they offer exciting opportunities for participative governance. A model of “systematic civic stewardship” frames the city as community-based, action-learning system. Leaders play key roles in neighborhood teams focused on local challenges (graduation rates, health outcomes, etc.), while learning and working with peers via city-wide communities of practice. We have much to learn about learning systems in any context—understanding how they work in communities and cities draws on organization experience and provokes new insights.

Does anyone else think it’s troubling that so many of the leaders of the organizations we support don’t feel particularly supported by their funders? What explains this disconnect and what should we do about it?

Learning for Development (L4D)'s insight:

The author draws on an evaluation of a leadership development programme that underscores the need to "listen" more closely to the needs of non-profit leaders.

Leading Blog: A Leadership Blog: The Good Struggle | Learning to lead | Scoop.it

Excerpt from the LeadershipNow review:

“Almost everything—how we manage our organizations and our lives, how we make decisions at work and at home, and even how we think about ourselves—is deeplyshaped by markets and market-based thinkingThis creates greater uncertainty, obscures right choices, and puts pressure on us to abandon principles that we used to rely on. Responsible leaders find themselves engaged in the good struggle: “a long effort, demanding perseverance and courage, to make good on serious but profoundly fallible commitments in an uncertain and often unforgiving world.”

This review highlights 5 key questions for responsible leadership, explored by Joseph Badaracco in the book.

Think Functionally, Act Strategically

Think Functionally, Act Strategically | Learning to lead | Scoop.it

What should the role of the corporate support function be in business strategy? Until recently, the answer was relatively straightforward. System-wide, service-oriented functions existed to carry out the many specialized tasks that every corporation needs to have done. Human resources (HR) recruited employees, managed benefits transactions, and oversaw evaluation and promotion practices. Information technology (IT) ran and helped support the company’s computer systems. Finance carried out all processes related to accounts, debts, and taxes. Learning and organizational development offered training programs tagged to the skills the company needed. Legal vetted contracts and managed issues related to compliance. And so on.

Via The Learning Factor
Learning for Development (L4D)'s insight:

This article offers some interesting insights from the corporate sector on how organizational functions and leadership roles are evolving to deal with increasingly complex and non-linear market environments.
