How To Create An App Library

How To Create An App Library | Learning to be a teacher librarian | Scoop.it

"Apps and books are more similar than they might seem. They each diffuse content, provide access to expertise, and allow the cataloging and consolidation of knowledge into accessible forms for learners to study. And while there are important differences—apps can be constantly refreshed new information, while a book is what it is the moment it is published—there are some lessons to be learned with how we collect and categorize books."

Intetesting idea. UT-Brownsville just launced a 1-to-1 iPad pilot project. App Libraries may be a good way to distribute apps to all members of a program.

Perhaps this will be useful to our 'iPad'ers.

"Information overload" - libraries and bookshops have always contained overwhelming quantiities of data, just as a phonebook used to - but most people never felt compelled to engage with all of it... has that changed?

RESOURCING FOR THE AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM : BUILDING DIGITAL COLLECTIONS by Lyn Hay

RESOURCING FOR THE AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM : BUILDING DIGITAL COLLECTIONS by Lyn Hay | Learning to be a teacher librarian | Scoop.it

An extensive body of research spanning five decades has shown that the quality of a school library’s collection has a significant impact on student learning, whether measured in terms of reading scores, literacy or learning more generally, on student achievement, regardless of the socioeconomic or educational levels of the adults within the community (Lonsdale, 2003; Scholastic Library Publishing, 2008).

Crackerjack Education

Crackerjack Education | Learning to be a teacher librarian | Scoop.it

The new Australian National Curriculum has inspired two women to put together an online range of hundreds of interactive Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander resources for teachers, parents and educators.
Wiradjuri woman Nola Turner-Jensen and Brisbane-born Janelle Latcham said ‘Crackerjack Education’ had been developed over the past 2 years to help young Australians in mainstream classrooms understand the depth and beauty of Australian Aboriginal & Torres Strait islander history and culture.
“The most exciting thing for me about this collection of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander digital resources is that by matching them to the National Curriculum, we are ensuring that they cross all mainstream learning areas, not just Aboriginal & Torres Strait islander,” Ms Turner-Jensen said.
“We are committed to ensuring our resources are modern, exciting and relevant enough for teachers in Australia to use them everyday in their classrooms.” Our aim is to support educators to feel confident to use our resources.

Librarian@HOPE's curator insight, June 16, 2013 3:57 PM

With Tackk, students can produce slick, professional looking reports on any subject in literally a matter of minutes, allowing them to focus on learning the content rather than worrying about the form in which it's presented.  Without having to create an account, students have access to easy, professional-quality text, image, and video integration, which makes for a much richer online experience than was previously possible with this little headache.

Teachers have used Tackk to both supplement, and in some cases replace, more traditional projects like posters and folders.  In addition to being quick, user-friendly, and elegant, it can also serve as a valuable introduction to web-based publishing for students of all ages. -- Eric Sheninger
