The Brain Geek: BRAIN MYTH-BUSTING: Nice pheromones. Wanna date?

The Brain Geek: BRAIN MYTH-BUSTING: Nice pheromones. Wanna date? | Writing, Research, Applied Thinking and Applied Theory: Solutions with Interesting Implications, Problem Solving, Teaching and Research driven solutions | Scoop.it

A big industry has sprouted up, promising to sell you products guaranteed to make finding the love of your life as easy as making toast. One such product is perfume spiked with pheromones. Squirt on a few pheromones, and the next thing you know, you'll be standing at an altar in a white dress while a handsome tuxedoed gentleman puts a ring on your finger. Supposedly, pheromones bypass all the logic and control centers of the brain and go straight to the areas that control love and attraction. They're a real life love potion! As soon as you smell them, you fall madly in love with someone. That guy/girl is so amazing! You don't know why! There's just something fabulous about him/her! You want to marry him/her now! Or so pheromone perfume ads promise us. And then they charge more money for that perfume, because the pheromones make it super special.

But what are pheromones? And do they work?

Sharrock's insight:

conclusion: "Despite lots of effort, there has never been a scientific study showing that humans can sense pheromones or that pheromones change the way we act and behave. So it doesn't matter if we release them, or how many perfumes we wear. It's like yelling at a fully deaf person and expecting them to respond. It just won't work."

How Can We Prevent False Confessions From Kids?

How Can We Prevent False Confessions From Kids? | Writing, Research, Applied Thinking and Applied Theory: Solutions with Interesting Implications, Problem Solving, Teaching and Research driven solutions | Scoop.it
A new study shows that most cops use the same interrogation techniques on both adults and juveniles—and why that needs to change. In fact, that case is just one example of a very frequent phenomenon, especially among adolescents and teenagers. A 2006 article in American Psychologist cited a review of exonerations from 1989 to 2004 and found that 42 percent of exonerations of juveniles involved false confessions at the time of the crime, compared with the 13 percent false confessions involved in adult exonerations. “Among the youngest of these juvenile exonerees (12- to 15-year-olds), 69 percent confessed to homicides and rapes that they did not commit.” Psychological research has found that the younger a teenager is, the more likely he or she is to confessing under pressure to something that he or she didn’t do.

IBM's cloud-computing system is making its first foray into food

-

Watson, a cognitive computing system that can learn and process natural human language, has been one of IBM's most exciting projects of the last decade. Over the past few years, Watson has learned a variety of tasks, from defeating contestants on "Jeopardy" to diagnosing life-threatening diseases. Now the cloud-based system is making its first foray into an industry we can all enjoy: food.

IBM calls it "cognitive cooking," a collaboration with New York's Institute of Culinary Education that uses data to create the best-tasting food possible.

IBM engineers carefully examined flavor compounds in thousands of ingredients, going down to the molecular level to measure the pleasantness of each. Then, using nutritional data from the FDA, they had the chefs at ICE try out the combinations Watson had determined would make for a delicious meal.

History’s deadliest swords – the ‘Damascene’ sabres forged in the Middle East from the 13th to the 18th centuries – were so sharp they could slice through falling silk, so legend has it. Their astonishing qualities are thought to have come from a combination of specific impurities in the iron ore and how hot and how long they were fired – a process that some scientists believe may have unwittingly created carbon nanotubes (CNTs) within them.

Sharrock's insight:

I like this. "Molecular Translational Energy

In scientific terms, heat is internal energy that flows from a system of relatively high temperature to one at a relatively low temperature. The internal energy itself, identified as thermal energy, is what people commonly mean when they say "heat." A form of kinetic energy due to the movement of molecules, thermal energy is sometimes called molecular translational energy.

Temperature is defined as a measure of the average molecular translational energy in a system, and the greater the temperature change for most materials, as we shall see, the greater the amount of thermal expansion. Thus, all these aspects of "heat"—heat itself (in the scientific sense), as well as thermal energy, temperature, and thermal expansion—are ultimately affected by the motion of molecules in relation to one another."
