The observation that "the medium is the message" is more true than ever in our current conversion into what might be called the "digital age.'  The potential of technology in education requires different thinking about education, because technology does not fit very well into supporting old ways of thinking.  Part of what is required for effectiveness in education is "hands on" creativity, rather than "top down" creativity.  Decisions of how to proceed is better made by teachers in collaboration with students and parents than by some centralized authority. -Lon

How to Rock at Writing Essential Questions

How to Rock at Writing Essential Questions | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

The simplest way to define an essential question is to call it an open question. It cannot be answered with a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’ or being labelled true or false. If you can Google the answer or respond in a brief manner, it doesn’t inspire intense investigation or creative output. That’s how you know it isn’t an essential question!

Nik Peachey's insight:

This is something that teachers so often find challenging and yet it's a fundamental skill of materials design.

How Strong is the Evidence? A Tool to Evaluate Studies of Ed Tech Products

How Strong is the Evidence? A Tool to Evaluate Studies of Ed Tech Products | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Technology offers a huge opportunity for schools to personalize learning for each student, but there is limited high-quality evidence to show which products are effective. And, even when product developers provide evidence, school leaders often lack the time or research expertise to analyze study results and determine whether the evidence is strong enough to support a purchasing decision.

How Productive Failure Leads to Better Learning

How Productive Failure Leads to Better Learning  | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Building something from nothing and sharing it with the world, in whatever your medium may be, requires a lot of bravery. I’ve chronicled both my own idea prison and some of my attempts to free myself before. Modern learning: The digital future is now - Innovate My School | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

There is a tale, which may or may not be true, that tells of when Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence was in its infancy, in the middle of the first decade of the millennium. The tale was that - along with the areas of Literacy, Numeracy and Health & Wellbeing – ICT was to be a responsibility of all practitioners. This would mean that every Scottish educator would be required to explicitly take ownership of supporting and tracking the digital skills of the learners in their care. Then sadly, the story goes, for some reason ICT was quietly removed.
