The Nature of Curriculum

I often hear that children go to Wikipedia and print out the answer, without even reading it and then hand it in as homework. I'm sorry but if they can do that, it's the homework, not the child that is at fault. If the curriculum allows it to be done without engaging the brain then it's the curriculum we should worry about.

And then there’s MOOCs. I can’t express adequately just how pissed off I am about MOOCs – not the concept, but all the hubris and nonsense that’s been talked and written about them. At a personal level, it was as if 45 years of work was for nothing. All the research and study I and many others had done on what makes for successful learning online were totally ignored, with truly disastrous consequences in terms of effective learning for the vast majority of participants who took MOOCs from the Ivy League universities. Having ignored online learning for nearly 20 years, Stanford, MIT and Harvard had to re-invent online learning in their own image to maintain their perceived superiority in all things higher educational.

Yes! As an online learner and teacher I found the absence of best practices for online learning missing in all my Mooc participation. It would better be termed distance learning, falling back to the correspondence education of the past.

As it happens, I value deep reading – and so, perhaps, do you. And so, quite obviously, do all the youngish people I see everyday on London transport reading 700-page printed books such as the Game of Thrones series, 50 Shades of Grey or the new Donna Tartt. Stuart Jeffries has written persuasively about the popularity of such doorstops, as well as complex modern TV series. This might be a culture not of attention deficit but of "a wealth of attention focused more readily on the things that warrant it".

We have to see that for some students, technology actually can provide them the voice that they have never had before.  I spoke to one student that said the use of social media actually inspired them to start speaking publicly because they developed confidence through a medium that worked for them.  I think of how many students would benefit and feel more comfortable talking in public when they would be allowed to use a medium that works for them first.

In this talk, Sugata Mitra will take us through the origins of schooling as we know it, to the dematerialisation of institutions as we know them. Thirteen years of experiments in children's education takes us through a series of startling results – children can self-organise their own learning, they can achieve educational objectives on their own, they can read by themselves. Finally, the most startling of them all: groups of children with access to the internet can learn anything by themselves. From the slums of India, to the villages of India and Cambodia, to poor schools in Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, the USA and Italy, to the schools of Gateshead and the rich international schools of Washington and Hong Kong, Sugata's experimental results show a strange new future for learning.

In this research paper Graham Hall and Guy Cook explore teacher attitudes to own-language use in the classroom. They conducted a global survey and interviews with practising teachers.
They found evidence of widespread own-language use within ELT, and suggest that teachers’ attitudes towards own-language use, and their classroom practices, are more complex than usually acknowledged. The findings also suggest that there is a potential gap between mainstream ELT literature and teachers’ practices on the ground.

A learning strategy is a student’s learning path, whether deliberate or not, through particular content, and the resulting learning outcomes. And Knewton can measure the effects of these strategies, to the percentile, for every student, at the concept level.

There are myriad learning strategies that Knewton measures and adjusts for. A sample of the ones we’re focused on now: the amount of content covered per session, the format of the learning experience (text vs. video vs. game vs. physical simulation vs. group discussion, etc.), the difficulty level of prose explaining a given concept, the difficulty of accompanying practice questions, the time of day, whether content contains mnemonic devices, whether it confuses cause and effect, whether it makes use of lists, student attention span, student engagement with particular learning content, strategic modalities (e.g., does the content define a procedure vs. address a common misconception vs. use a concrete example?), the presence or absence of learning aids (e.g., hints), user-specific features (e.g., difficulty relative to the student’s current proficiency), and many, many more.

It is more likely we possess a mixture of learning styles, learning strategies, and intelligences. Schools have become places where we attempt to push students into conforming and moving towards a mythical ideal which means those who do not conform stand out and there must be something wrong in their learning. It is more likely humans are on a continuum and learning is different for each of us. Yes, there are some who are at extreme ends of the continuum and learning is a challenge which has to be met. What would happen if the vast majority were given more freedom in their learning and teachers given freedom in working relationally with students?

As parent of two teenagers and as a teacher of pre-teens, I took away a lot of information from It’s Complicated. First and foremost is the idea that young people have less and less access to public spaces and time in which to socialize with friends and peers. The days of our moms and dads kicking us outdoors in the morning and saying, “Don’t come back until dinner time” are over.

But the art of teaching and exciting young minds to learn are being taken over by Government make no mistake it is the core beliefs they want taught and will punish a school and teacher if not implemented . Many students still do not understand the limitations of finding information on the free web. Google is about the extent of it and if it isn't found in the first few results, it does not exist or is too hard to find (or worse still, what is found must be "it.").

 

From article: "We need to ensure that they know how to evaluate a website, a blog post, a tweet, a Facebook entry. These evaluative skills transfer cross curricularly and prepare students for the broader world of online communication."

So why do some of my lecturer’s discourage me from using “technology”? I can’t say for sure, but I would guess that, as is so often the case, they fear it because they do not understand it. And that is fine. Long gone are the days where the teacher is the beacon of all knowledge. But if you don’t understand something, you need to be open to learning about it, and if you can’t manage that then you should probably stop trying to train pre-service teachers.
