Social Media and the Professional Learning Community | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

As life grows more complex, so too does education. The role of the teacher, once essentially an autonomous, well defined position, is now vast and continually changing. It is now impossible for a teacher to be engaging in best practice unless they are part of a supportive, informed and well developed network.

Why do so many Moodle courses suck?

Why do so many Moodle courses suck? | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

Moodle is a magnificent free product and has the potential to enable schools and teachers to build wonderfully unique interactive online learning courses in which learner interaction can be tracked, measured and responded to. Despite this the vast majority of Moodle courses I see are a long list of Word and PDF documents with at best a few forums that enable a minimum of human social interaction.

Nik Peachey's insight:

This is my latest post. Based on my experiences of helping teachers to cope with creating courses in Moodle.

Donna Farren's curator insight, August 1, 8:16 AM

Nik makes some great points about Moodle - or really putting any content online - there has to be instructional design training, online teaching training or blended teaching training and how to select content for online delivery.  technical training alone is not enough.

Amidst all the arguments about “flipped classrooms” and “hybrid learning,” however, few people have actually analyzed what makes MOOCs work (or fail): the content. Online learners spend most of their time watching videos — but are the videos any good?

No huge surprises here, but worth a quick read if you are designing online materials.

Hands-On and Student-Centered: Subverting the Typical College Experience | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

The model is based on the premise of how things work in the real-world: problems are interdisciplinary and require collaboration. “Employers want people who can communicate effectively in writing and speaking; they want people who can reason laterally; and most importantly they want people who can collaborate with people from other parts of their organization,” Helfand said. He’s not convinced the majority of universities are preparing students for that kind of work experience.

The Myth of Device fatigue

The Myth of Device fatigue | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

In my observations around my school, it’s those same students claiming device fatigue in the classroom that are not hesitating to turn to their device for ‘life updates’ as they leave that very same room. I would propose that it’s not fatigue caused by device use but that caused by the pain of trying to carry out conventional, 20th century classroom tasks on devices that are designed for a world that conducts itself very differently.

Curation as a tool for teaching and learning

What is curation anyway, and how can it be used as a tool for student and teacher learning? This essay will investigate what curation is and the different contexts it is used in. Why is it important; who are the curators, what motivates them and what makes a great curator? What processes and tools are used for curation and what digital literacies are required for successful curation? It will conclude with an investigation into ways teachers can use curation both with and for their students and as a tool for their own professional learning and a brief look at some curation tools.

Twenty terrible reasons for lecturing

One reason for lecturers not responding to their everyday experience is, I believe, their ignorance of alternatives. If you can't imagine what else you might do than lecture, then it hardly matters what your everyday experience is telling you. Lecturing is taken for granted. Courses are designed around lecture topics. Knowledge is packaged in our heads in one-hour-lecture-sized chunks. Why is this?

Nik Peachey's insight:

Every lecturer should read this.

Ruby Rennie Panter's curator insight, August 1, 5:20 AM

Not about mobile learning, but even when we start to design an online course we tend to think in terms of lecture-type input first, even though the input may be some kind of online reading material, or (quite commonly) a video of a lecture. The ideas here are pertinent, therefore, in the preparation for syllabus design both for face to face and online.

Technology is only a tool: No technology can fix a bad educational philosophy or compensate for bad practice. In fact, if we are going in the wrong direction, technology will get us there faster. Providing schools with hardware and software does not automatically reform teaching and improve learning. Much depends on educational practices and how ICTs are used to enhance them.
