UNESCO Office in Bangkok: Reading in the mobile era

UNESCO Office in Bangkok: Reading in the mobile era | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

UNESCO is currently investigating how access to text can be improved through the use of technology, specifically basic mobile phones. Today mobile phones are common in areas where books are scarce. The United Nations estimates that 6 billion people have access to a connected mobile device of some sort, while only 4.5 billion have access to a toilet.

Nik Peachey's insight:

A short article with some interesting links at the end.

Lifelong Learning and the Maker Movement

Lifelong Learning and the Maker Movement | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Despite the impressive potential of the maker movement and the aspect of fun learning by making, still, there remain some challenges in mainstreaming the maker movement in education. What Snapchat Tells Us About The Future Of News And Information Gathering - Forbes

What Snapchat Tells Us About The Future Of News And Information Gathering - Forbes | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
There are other differences that set Snapchat apart from Facebook, for example the complex algorithms and procedures that have led to accusations that Zuckerberg’s company is editorializing; Snapchat Discover is essentially a feed reader or news aggregator, the magic tool that many of us consider to be the beating heart of our information systems, but that few adults who haven’t grown up with the internet still don’t really understand and thus fail to use. If you don’t use a feed reader you aren’t informing yourself, you’re being informed. Think about it.

'Teachers must embrace new technology or risk becoming obsolete'

'Teachers must embrace new technology or risk becoming obsolete' | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Teachers residing in schools were the keepers of information. Schools determined who got what information and when they got it. Information for kids was determined and dispensed by the teacher. Control and compliance were the keys to the information and allowed for the orderly distribution of content. This was education for centuries.
Nik Peachey's insight:

I don't think it's a question of 'risk'.

When radio arrived, it too was deemed a menace, blamed for distracting children from their homework. Tween Online Habits, Revealed | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

Most toddlers can swipe an iPad, tap an e-book, and call grandma on mom’s phone, so you’d think that kids in upper elementary school would be seasoned digital users and experts at navigating the web. 8 digital skills we must teach our children

8 digital skills we must teach our children | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

The way children use technology is very different from adults. This gap makes it difficult for parents and educators to fully understand the risks and threats that children could face online. As a result, adults may feel unable to advise children on the safe and responsible use of digital technologies. Likewise, this gap gives rise to different perspectives of what is considered acceptable behaviour.

The use of virtual reality for language investigation and learning

The use of virtual reality for language investigation and learning | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

Considering these recent findings, the use of VR in the study of language processes becomes even more reasonable. In fact, VR can be considered an “embodied technology” for its effects on body perceptions (Riva, 2002): it is possible to use VR to induce controlled changes to the experience of the body; furthermore, the virtual environment can be enriched to the extent that it can become a plausible copy of the real world.
