Digital Reading Skills | Delta Publishing - English Language Teaching

Digital Reading Skills | Delta Publishing - English Language Teaching | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

We take it for granted as English language teachers that we need to develop our students’ reading skills, but in most cases the nearest our students get to reading online is a printed version of a web page pre selected by their teacher. At best they may actually get to see a pre selected page on the screen of a computer, but is this enough to really develop their digital literacies?

Nik Peachey's insight:

This is an article I wrote quite some time ago, but which I still find to be relevant today (perhaps more than ever) now that the facilities certainly do exist in many places to push students (and teachers) to do more to develop digital reading skills.

Seven Ways to Break the Consumer Mindset in Schools | John Spencer | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
When I look at the data, I notice a trend. Students have never used their devices creatively. They have the power to capture and tell a story but they don't. They have the power to connect to an authentic audience, but it's not happening. They have the potential to build models and design products and turn things from wild ideas to tangible realities. However, it's not happening.

For Students, the Importance of Doing Work That Matters

For Students, the Importance of Doing Work That Matters | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
The reality of this moment is that every one of our students can create and share and connect in ways that didn’t exist even a decade ago. I can’t imagine what it’s going to be like a decade from now. But I know this: if our students look at the work we’re asking them to do today and say “It doesn’t matter,” we’re missing a huge opportunity to help them become the learners they now need to be.

The 'granny cloud': the network of volunteers helping poorer children learn | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
It’s fashionable to say the education system is broken. It’s not broken at all. The Victorian system, which is the model of education used practically everywhere in the world, does exactly what it was designed to do. Which is to have an elite class who will run the show, assisted by an army of clerks for whom a curriculum was designed and who were mass-produced to do their jobs.

Such debate about the place and purpose of online searching in learning and assessments is not new. But rather than thinking of ways to prevent students from cheating or plagiarising in their assessed pieces of work, maybe our obsession with the “authenticity” of their coursework or assessment is missing another important educational point.

DebbyBruck's comment, August 18, 3:29 AM
This is so right on - thank you. Educating one's self online is empowering only if the user understands the difference between "crap collection" and that which is meaningful and useable at the time of curation. Curation only has value when we use the information in the moment as a motivator and inspiration to carry on in bettering ourselves in the here and now. This is my idea of content curation and educating on what speaks to our hearts in the very NOW moment.
DebbyBruck's curator insight, August 18, 4:23 AM

Online searching/learning has a definite and substantial impact in our world today. Just remember to use regularly what you are saving (or curating), and to balance it all with real world experience.  Visit your elders, your neighbors, your parents, your community, your friends (and listen to their stories): in many cases they were alive many decades before you were.  They saw wars, political changes, social movements, etc., that can never be described in the same way online than from first hand experience.  Honor these people by your presence AND learn all you can online. Temper all of it by having one foot in the world of FREE information and one foot in the world of first-hand contact with those who lived those times. The cool thing about attending a school (in person) is you get the best of both worlds - interaction with others and your time online.

Children are not inspired to learn by repeating the same processes over and over. Children develop an interest in a variety of subjects because of interest. This interest can lead to a better understanding. Of a topic of interest when they are asked to research or are inspired to research to learn more about something. By allowing a child to delve into a topic allows for greater understanding in the sense of accomplishment.
