How the Power of Interest Drives Learning

How the Power of Interest Drives Learning | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

If catching people’s interest is about seizing attention and providing stimulation, holding it is about finding deeper meaning and purpose in the exercise of interest. Caution is required here, however. Research has found that infusing a subject with meaning by stressing its future utility can produce the opposite of its intended effect.

Nik Peachey's insight:

Some interesting insights into how to capture and hold our students' interest and attention.

Mary Starry's curator insight, November 7, 2013 1:12 PM

Several good take away messages here.  Liked the idea of focusing more on the questions we're asking.  Also found it interesting that students lose interest if we tell them how this will apply in their lives, while asking them to identify how this concept or task will be used in their future lives results in increased interest.

Lifelong Learning and the Maker Movement

Lifelong Learning and the Maker Movement | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Despite the impressive potential of the maker movement and the aspect of fun learning by making, still, there remain some challenges in mainstreaming the maker movement in education. First of all, it should not be misunderstood that learners should be given to build things without proper acquisition of fundamental skills, such as basic literacy and numeracy,

What Snapchat Tells Us About The Future Of News And Information Gathering - Forbes

What Snapchat Tells Us About The Future Of News And Information Gathering - Forbes | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
There are other differences that set Snapchat apart from Facebook, for example the complex algorithms and procedures that have led to accusations that Zuckerberg’s company is editorializing; Snapchat Discover is essentially a feed reader or news aggregator, the magic tool that many of us consider to be the beating heart of our information systems, but that few adults who haven’t grown up with the internet still don’t really understand and thus fail to use. If you don’t use a feed reader you aren’t informing yourself, you’re being informed. Think about it.

'Teachers must embrace new technology or risk becoming obsolete'

'Teachers must embrace new technology or risk becoming obsolete' | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Teachers residing in schools were the keepers of information. Schools determined who got what information and when they got it. Information for kids was determined and dispensed by the teacher. Control and compliance were the keys to the information and allowed for the orderly distribution of content. This was education for centuries.

I don't think it's a question of 'risk'.

8 digital skills we must teach our children

8 digital skills we must teach our children | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

The way children use technology is very different from adults. This gap makes it difficult for parents and educators to fully understand the risks and threats that children could face online. As a result, adults may feel unable to advise children on the safe and responsible use of digital technologies. Likewise, this gap gives rise to different perspectives of what is considered acceptable behaviour.

The use of virtual reality for language investigation and learning

The use of virtual reality for language investigation and learning | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

Considering these recent findings, the use of VR in the study of language processes becomes even more reasonable. In fact, VR can be considered an “embodied technology” for its effects on body perceptions (Riva, 2002): it is possible to use VR to induce controlled changes to the experience of the body; furthermore, the virtual environment can be enriched to the extent that it can become a plausible copy of the real world.

Augmented and Virtual Reality: Where Is the Educational Value?

Augmented and Virtual Reality: Where Is the Educational Value? | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Looking back through the archives of THE Journal, you can find articles about the potential of VR dating all the way back to 1999. So why have previous VR technologies failed to catch on in public schools? And are the consumer technologies being introduced today, such as the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, more likely to find a home in classrooms?

Ben's curator insight, June 22, 7:00 PM

Virtual Reality in the classroom provides a higher level of interactivity in subjects where both the instructor and students can explore together. With the rise in gaming VR devices, they are now becoming cheaper and more powerful in their capabilities. They can be used to explore geography, teach math, and even discover historic sites. This is coupled with their ability to create motivation through educational VR games.
