elearnspace › Learning as Artifact Creation | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
One student creates an image to detail the architecture of the course. Another updates it and adds to it. Another comes by and critiques it. The artifact serves as a social learning object. This process reflects my earlier point: big trends unfold behind the scenes over time and in education, they map and mirror to what people do with information that is digital and networked.

My Personalized Learning Approach Isn’t About Tech. It’s About Dignity. - EdSurge News

Personalized learning truly becomes "personal" once we develop real relationships with our students. There’s a spectrum of how much time and energy teachers can devote to building and maintaining these relationships. It can start within the classroom, extend out into the school, go deeper into the family and out into the community.

Make no mistake--students expect the instructor to join in the discussions and make frequent comments to them with regard to the subject matter being taught. There is a noticeable absence when the instructor fails to engage, and ironically students are surprisingly appreciative when the instructor posts targeted responses to them.

Playlist: Games to Learn From as You Play – How We Get To Next

Playlist: Games to Learn From as You Play – How We Get To Next | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
That’s a shame. The key to learning new skills or knowledge is repetition, and games offer an easy way to create incentives for that repetition. (Just think how often “gameification” is used to try and fool people into thinking something like exercise is fun.) Often with games, the ones that are most successful at teaching players are those that are most subtle about it. They manage to make work feel like play.
Nik Peachey's insight:

Some interesting examples.

I'm not sure I agree with the introduction. The potential of using games for learning stretches far beyond repetition, however subtle. The games listed, however, looks great.

School technology: does simplicity beat variety?

School technology: does simplicity beat variety? | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
A healthy balance between simplicity and variety in edtech empowers pupils to learn in a way most suited to their needs, without making the classroom an intimidating or over-digitised environment. Ultimately, pedagogy is not about how much technology we introduce or ensuring we retain our tried-and-tested teaching methods. We should concentrate on the quality of the learning that sits behind this technology.

Some interesting points but a bit of a sell.

Why the culture of ‘free’ is damaging edtech & education

Why the culture of ‘free’ is damaging edtech & education | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Having a constant flow of great free apps is great, but the reality is that any professional company that is developing apps has costs and needs to somehow make money. App developers just like teachers and bankers have to eat and keep a roof over their heads, so any company that doesn’t have a business model for generating income is doomed.

Making Time for Quiet Contemplation

Making Time for Quiet Contemplation | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Our time is precious and there are many ways in which it can be wasted but the deliberate and mindful process of contemplative thought should not be confused with mindless inactivity. The processes of learning, problem solving, ideation and creativity occur as much or more so during periods of inactivity as they do during times of activity. When we value learning over work we become open to the possibility that a student whose mind seems to be wondering, who is not actively “doing” the set task may indeed be fully immersed with their learning.

We’re not teaching the web correctly

We’re not teaching the web correctly | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Teenagers use social networking apps almost exclusively, and therefore, they don’t know that they are missing out on the wider web’s breadth. There are no thickets of hyperlinks, no galaxies of websites, no freedoms to hack and customize, no opportunities to learn snippets of HTML and CSS. That is because the skills they would need to take advantage of the web—to move beyond the borders of familiar apps—remain largely absent from traditional classroom settings.

A third way: Algorithms and teacher empowerment for every individual | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
The established model of schooling is not only becoming unsustainable in cost and supply of talented teachers, it will also have to rapidly improve its ability to educate children to higher levels of technical and creative skills. Our schooling systems need to prepare people to effectively compete with machines—or to work effectively alongside them. Can schools use machines to help tackle that challenge?

Hands-Off Teaching Cultivates Metacognition

Hands-Off Teaching Cultivates Metacognition | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
A great teacher doesn't teach as much as possible. A great teacher teaches as little as possible, while modeling the behaviors of how to figure something out. Perhaps it seems too obvious to say that your goal should be for students to think as much as possible during your class. But in this case, "thinking" really means thinking about the material plus how to dig in, break it apart, understand it, and build on that. It means thinking about how to constantly get better.

The Textbook Is Dying. Meet the Artificially Intelligent Software That’s Replacing It.  | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
This fall Pearson introduced an “immersive digital learning tool” called Revel that reimagines the textbook as a multimedia experience replete with videos, interactive exercises, and animated infographics. The goal, Pearson’s Stephen Frail tells me, is to make the course materials “more compelling than Facebook,” which after all is only “one click away” whenever a student is doing coursework on her computer or tablet.
