Why We Changed Our Model of the “8 Essential Elements of PBL” | Blog | Project Based Learning | BIE

Why We Changed Our Model of the “8 Essential Elements of PBL” | Blog | Project Based Learning | BIE | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
BIE’s Essential Project Design Elements contain two new items, both of which are familiar to those who know PBL. One is “authenticity,” which has to do with how real-world the project is. The other is “reflection,” which we have previously coupled with “revision” but now stands on its own; students should reflect on what they’re learning, how they’re learning, and what they have accomplished in a project.

CHRISTINE OWEN's curator insight, May 22, 9:29 PM

New technology must be accompanied by new pedagogies for new learning to take place. We are really only guessing at what the future holds for our students. In previous and even recent ages, we had a pattern of development to base our predictions upon. Now,the impossible is very likely, and the possible will be something else entirely tomorrow. We must ensure our students have the capacity to be adaptable and creative in their thinking to take advantage of and flourish in our world of ever improving technology and access.

Technology has helped me tremendously in converting my class from ‘Teacher Driven’ to ‘Student Driven’. Technology tools also provide me real time data about students learning – so I can adjust my teaching accordingly. When the Internet Delivers Its Own Content, What’s Left for the Teacher?

When the Internet Delivers Its Own Content, What’s Left for the Teacher? | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
I’ve started recognizing a common thread to the latest trends in teaching. Flipped learning, blending learning, student-centered learning, project-based learning, and even self-organized learning—they all marginalize the teacher’s expertise. Or, to put it more euphemistically, they all transform the teacher into a more facilitative role.
Nik Peachey's insight:

Interesting article, but can't say that I agree on what the conception of a teachers expertise is. It's not about subject knowledge it's about understanding learning.

more...
RossanaPiccini's comment, April 3, 10:01 AM
This is not just sad news for us teachers, it is a dangerous belief in the power a few powerful people to control education at large. I find this worrying.
Robin Yu's curator insight, April 5, 1:06 PM

The companies that are taking over teachers' roles.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, April 21, 9:44 PM

There are two things that stood out for me in this article. First, Derrida's concept of deconstruction is a critical deconstructing of what we think is reality. His writing about teaching would not have eliminated the teacher and replaced the teacher with a burger flipper. The teacher's role would certainly transform and move beyond what we understand it to be, but it would be reconstructed to be further deconstructed.

The second point is that teaching is about leading and relating to students. That does not mean we do without teachers. It means that teachers are finding their way along the path.

@ivon_ehd1
