Educational Games That Really Are Fun

Educational Games That Really Are Fun | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

It's often been a criticism of many attempts to make MMORPG computer games educational, that when that happens the fun goes. I have to say that it is often the case, but I think Power Up is an exception.

Power up is an educational computer game based around the concept of helping students to understand the need for clean energy. It takes the scenario of a planet ( set in the future) which needs rescuing.

Nik Peachey's insight:

This is quite an old blog post (from 2008) but the game is still there and still good.

The lessons start with reading and discussion around the topics and then go in to more depth to look behind the information and research the topic area using a range of digital research and presentations tools. The lessons usually conclude with some form of output from the students such as a published text, presentation or their own infographic.

The largest internet company in 2030? This prediction will probably surprise you | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
His vision for 2030 includes a massively enhanced version of today's open online courses — the kind of instruction you may find with Khan Academy, Coursera, or MIT OpenCourseWare. Only, the instructors won't be humans beamed through videos. They'll be bots, and they'll be smart enough to personalize each lesson plan to the child sitting in front of the screen.

Well what do you think to that?

Most people are secretly threatened by creativity

Most people are secretly threatened by creativity | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
The problem begins with education. We know that teachers say creativity is important. But research shows that many teachers define creativity as a skill that’s mainly associated with the arts—thereby downplaying the essential role that creativity plays in everything from math and science to argumentative writing and sports. Furthermore, teachers routinely label creative students as “disruptive,” treating outside-the-box thinking not as a strength but as a problem to be dealt with.
Nik Peachey's insight:

Sad but true.

Chatbots for Learning

Chatbots for Learning | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Chatbots can operate according to a set of predefined rules or, using machine learning, work based on various degrees of artificial intelligence. They can be accessed through chat tools — such as Facebook Messenger — or other types of messaging apps. Basically, a chatbot interacts with the user in the same way a live person would — through conversation. Theoretically, the bot gets smarter as it interacts with more people and learns new things, which opens up some fascinating instructional avenues to explore.
Nik Peachey's insight:

Not really anything new (I was using chatbots with students in Morocco back in 2002) but still interesting.

Innovate My School - An immersive world of learning through play

Innovate My School - An immersive world of learning through play | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Children are naturally creative, and in order to encourage their talents, we should be nurturing this creativity, rather than forcing it into a box-ticking process. It’s no secret that when children are having fun, they learn more about the topic as their engagement is greater. By allowing them to see subjects in a playful manner, they will be more enthusiastic about them later in their school careers, and they will have developed the cognitive and personal skills needed to work with others in their class more effectively.

Humans Evolved to Process Stories Better Than Logic

Humans Evolved to Process Stories Better Than Logic | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Any story we tell of our species, any science of human nature, that ignores how important stories are in shaping what and how we think and feel is false. We evolved to be ultra-social (and self-deficient), so we care deeply about character and plot.

This article relates to World Cultural Geography because is talking about language. Both the textbook and this article discuss  the importance of knowing more than one language. Many different places around the world have more than one language. For example, in the textbook it states that Switzerland has four official languages. This article explains the importance of teaching young adults who speak more than one language. As stated in the article, " Children from various cultural backgrounds bring so much color and depth to the classroom." It is very  important to preserve the languages that these children know and have grown up around.

What I've been reading: Thinking Critically with Digital Media | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Another aspect of the book I liked very much was the number of resources suggested. I try to keep abreast of techie stuff but I had no idea of the existence of some of the excellent websites for creating presentations, infographics, videos and so on. I’m looking forward to retying them out!

Bottom line: the book is excellent, and excellent value for money. Even if you don’t teach media literacy or digital literacy, buy the book just to try out all the resources yourself.

It’s terribly confusing, but perhaps no coincidence, that three of the world’s most prominent consumer technology companies—Apple, Google, Microsoft—each boast a “Classroom” tool aimed at K-12 educators and students. After all, what better way to secure a foothold in the market than impressing one’s brand to future consumers at a young age?
