Students Speak Up in Class, Silently, via Social Media

Students Speak Up in Class, Silently, via Social Media | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

Skeptics — and at this stage they far outnumber enthusiasts — fear introducing backchannels into classrooms will distract students and teachers, and lead to off-topic, inappropriate or even bullying remarks. A national survey released last month found that 2 percent of college faculty members had used Twitter in class, and nearly half thought that doing so would negatively affect learning.

Nik Peachey's insight:

Interesting article about the use of backchannels. I'm a big fan myself and use them all the time.

Now that I've started using backchannel communication in my seminars and classes, I really miss it when it's not available.

Ken Morrison's comment, March 4, 2013 3:53 AM
I have used Twitter in a few classes. Students say they like it, but I fail to use it more often. It worked great as a break when I had two-hour classes. I would tell students to tweet about something new that they learned in the last hour and then take a break and/or questions. I would use break time to review the tweets via the common hashtag. We could start the next hour with a student-generated review and Q/A session. I was happy with the results, solid instruction & unscientific 'feeling' of the classroom.

Love the idea of engaging students to think freely ... without embarrassment to them or interrupting the teaher!

A Call for Fewer Screens in the Classroom

A Call for Fewer Screens in the Classroom | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
In a day and age in which professional educators are trying out new tech tools, and students are increasingly huddled around screens, a return to paper seems almost innovative—particularly since research comparing reading and writing on the computer vs. on paper supports screen-free classroom time to promote learning.
Nik Peachey's insight:

Seems a bit weak to be referencing research by a journalist from more than 14 years ago, but it's an opinion I guess.

5 Biggest Barriers to Education Technology | Edudemic | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

Increasingly, teachers are using technology in the classroom to aid learning and make it easier to chart student progress. In many classrooms across the country, students are assigned laptops or tablets, which they use to carry out in-class research, lessons, and projects. Teachers also often use SMART boards which are interactive whiteboards with touch screens.

Far more complex couplings between SAMR and Bloom are possible, involving convergent/divergent branchings, oscillations between levels, skipping of some SAMR levels, etc. Nonetheless, the simple structure described above is well suited to beginning practitioners’ needs, and even retains usefulness for more experienced faculty.

Learning in the age of Social Networks

Learning in the age of Social Networks | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

Our understanding of how to learn in this globally connected world is limited by our experience of learning. Our formal education has led us to believe that learning is something given to us. We are one step removed from the process of planning and regulating our learning for so much of our lives as learners that we become dependent on educators. We have powerful tools at our disposal and yet make poor use of them. Networks which should bring us closer together are used to divide and segregate. Instead of enhancing our collective understanding we are confronted by the challenges of alternate facts and fake news. We have an abundance of information but seemingly little wisdom and little understanding of who we may trust and how we may find truth.

The Overselling of Ed Tech

Show me something that helps kids create, design, produce, construct — and I’m on board. Show me something that helps them make things collaboratively (rather than just on their own), and I’m even more interested — although it’s important to keep in mind that meaningful learning never requires technology, so even here we should object whenever we’re told that software (or a device with a screen) is essential.

Most people are secretly threatened by creativity

Most people are secretly threatened by creativity | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
The problem begins with education. We know that teachers say creativity is important. But research shows that many teachers define creativity as a skill that’s mainly associated with the arts—thereby downplaying the essential role that creativity plays in everything from math and science to argumentative writing and sports. Furthermore, teachers routinely label creative students as “disruptive,” treating outside-the-box thinking not as a strength but as a problem to be dealt with.
