Grooming Students for A Lifetime of Surveillance

Grooming Students for A Lifetime of Surveillance | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
By preying on the absolute worst fears of administrators and parents across the country, technology companies are earning millions of dollars selling security “solutions” that do not accurately address the threat model these tools claim to dispel. School districts that purchase these systems further perpetuate the farce of security theater and infringe on students’ rights to privacy and individual freedom.
Nik Peachey's insight:

Very US centric, but still interesting reading.

Thinking Critically through Digital Media

Thinking Critically through Digital Media | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Although the use of internet and digital materials in the language classroom has come a long way over the last 20 years, still the vast majority of web based material that finds its way into the language classroom is used for information input or comprehension purposes. The students’ interaction with the materials is as such largely passive with the teacher controlling the suitability of the materials selected and deciding what information the students will extract from it.
Nik Peachey's insight:

Use the materials from my ebook to help develop digital literacy and encourage students to challenge the authenticity of the content they are expossed to. Contains 12 ready made lesson plans plus loys of tips and ideas for using infograohics and developing research & presentation skills.

Using Bloom’s Taxonomy to Write Effective Learning Objectives | TIPS

Using Bloom’s Taxonomy to Write Effective Learning Objectives | TIPS | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Like other taxonomies, Bloom’s is hierarchical, meaning that learning at the higher levels is dependent on having attained prerequisite knowledge and skills at lower levels. You will see Bloom’s Taxonomy often displayed as a pyramid graphic to help demonstrate this hierarchy. We have updated this pyramid into a “cake-style” hierarchy to emphasize that each level is built on a foundation of the previous levels.

You can't have too much Bloom.

Textbook technology: Taking classroom resources to the next level

Textbook technology: Taking classroom resources to the next level | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Having ebooks available on tablet devices is sure to streamline the learning process, and there are a number of benefits to be gained from this. One such benefit is that it gives students ownership of the curriculum content. As discussed previously, annotations and notes can often be lost or damaged when on paper, but with electronic text, students can highlight a single word, or a whole section, and type notes associated specifically to this. Using digital content gives both teachers and students the flexibility to get creative with notes and resources, as well as making them easier to manage.

Is Technology Being Integrated Effectively?

Is Technology Being Integrated Effectively? | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
In many cases the engagement factor is emphasized over learning outcomes and actual evidence of improvement aligned to standards. I get that this is not the end all be all, but nevertheless it is important. It goes without saying that effective technology integration should inform instruction and provide feedback as to the level of conceptual mastery students demonstrate.

Why marking students’ books should be the least of a language teacher’s priorities

Why marking students’ books should be the least of a language teacher’s priorities | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
The trending remedial methodology prescribing a conversation-for-learning approach to marking, whereby the feedback unfolds in the form of a dialogue between corrector and correctee, book-marking has become a very taxing process for both parties but especially for teachers. Chilling horror stories of teachers forced to three to four-hour book-marking marathons per day using 3 different ink-colours or stamps

Some good points here though I don't think that marking student homework should just be about error correction.

Teachers also need to learn how to engage students in higher-order thinking during the process. New teachers may get caught up in the technology and forget to have students pause and metacognitively think about what they are learning and how that connects to previously learned material. I coach my students to include questions in their lessons that ask students to explain their thinking or connect their ideas to the text.

Four cautionary lessons about education technology

Four cautionary lessons about education technology | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
There's good failure and there's dumb failure. The dumb failure we see over and over again is just dumping technology into schools and hoping for magic to happen; not having a plan, thinking that things will happen automatically because kids are “digital natives,” a term that obscures as much as it illuminates; thinking that just because technology is there your problem is solved."

Taxonomy Of eLearning: Does eLearning Need A New Taxonomy? - eLearning Industry

Taxonomy Of eLearning: Does eLearning Need A New Taxonomy? - eLearning Industry | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
When considering educational objectives, we perhaps need to consider ‘whose’ educational objectives? Where Bloom spoke of analyzing and evaluating concepts, processes, procedures, and principles, he clearly had the learner in mind as he classified educational goals. I ask if eLearning would not be better served by its own taxonomy (framework) where the separate objectives of the various parties involved in eLearning are distinctly and separately categorized. This is important because there are many aspects to eLearning. And none of them can promise a successful learning outcome. Successful learning outcomes (the result, or not, of educational objectives) require a multi-faceted approach to delivery.

Always room for another taxonomy.
