The real question we should be asking is not just, how long are they watching? But also, what are they seeing? How is it affecting them? How does what they see challenge their existing beliefs? What sort of cognitive loads and higher order thinking skills do they volunteer themselves for with their online behavior? Do we want them being told a story from a book, or creating their own story in an digital universe where they’re in control? Which one more naturally creates thinking habits and behavioral shifts and skill acquisition that they can transfer to the real world?

Five habits that boost independent learning! - Innovate My School | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

Independent learning has many different names - child centred, personalised or self-regulated - but at its core it is the process of shifting responsibility for the learning process from the teacher to the pupil. To achieve this outcome successfully, pupils need to have a deep understanding of their learning, be self-motivated and willing to collaborate with the teacher within the learning environment.

MIT Dean Takes Leave to Start New University Without Lectures or Classrooms

MIT Dean Takes Leave to Start New University Without Lectures or Classrooms | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

What I’m thinking of is huge project spaces. Large centralized laboratories. Basically just large, large open spaces, as well as big centralized laboratories where no one really has their own individual laboratory. So it’s just one integrated giant laboratory. And that goes with the research model that there would be no departments; it would just be transdisciplinary.

Interesting that this is happening, but there don't seem to be any great insights here.

What do we mean when we say, “Transformative learning experiences powered by technology”?

What do we mean when we say, “Transformative learning experiences powered by technology”? | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

A transformative learning experience fundamentally changes our understanding of what it means to learn and what it means to work together with others to learn.

Nik Peachey's insight:

A very good read.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, February 5, 11:15 AM

Technology is not a tool. Heidegger proposed it involves two intertwined definitions: human/anthropological and technological/instrumental. He proposed that technology is about a way of thinking, acting, and speaking about, with, and through the tools humans use. In that sense, the line about technology being transforming is accurate. When the two definitions are separated, that is not the case.

Wilko Dijkhuis's curator insight, February 6, 3:32 AM

Nice example of how a persons life and learning strategies became transformed by an experience at a young age (in this particular case it was an encounter with primitive computer technology, but in general it  could have been anything: e.g. hearing the saxophone played well for the first time, or "seeing" the mother of god in a cave)

Alas, also a typical example of unwarranted educational proselytizing. The man is so enthusiastic about his new insight that everybody has to hear the good news. Even worse, everybody has to convert and repent. The idea that Catholicism, Jazz or technology enhanced project based learning  does not work for everybody, never enters the man's mind.

Lets stop with this kind of "inspirational" stories in educational design. Lets stick to science (mainly cognitive and social psychology). I know it is boring, but it is our best shot at finding out what works for whom under which circumstances.
