Games In Education Could Help Students Learn By Failing

Games In Education Could Help Students Learn By Failing | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

Games create a non-threatening environment in which it is not only safe to fail, but expected. When you’re playing a game, you are consistently rewarded for perseverance and effort. Fujimoto describes how trying to fail on purpose–while playing Angry Birds, for instance–often teaches him something and gives him ideas about how to defeat the green pigs next time around.

Ryan McDonough's curator insight, July 7, 2014 2:17 PM

You died... You accomplished a lot but in the end, your character just couldn't live on. What do you do? You restart the game. Failing is something most people don't deal with very well. A valuable lesson gaming teaches students is that it is okay to fail-- there's always the chance to restart the level and try again. Persistence is being taught. Studies show that about 80% of the time someone plays a video game, they fail. They fall off a cliff, get shot, or run out of resources. There's a million other reasons they could die as well. Learning takes place when you die. If you fell, well, know you now not to go there next time. If you get shot, that's a good indication that your previous hiding spot wasn't such a great one, after all. Be resilent, and keep gaming. Don't give up just because you failed. Odds are, I failed, too.

For many education professionals, the thought of implementing technology into the classroom can often be a worry. Not wanting to offer learners new distractions that will hinder their progress, teachers are wary of using education technology. Why edtech needs to be part of our CPD

Why edtech needs to be part of our CPD | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Most teachers therefore want two things from educational technology. Firstly they want it to at least fit in with the pedagogical approaches that they have developed and, hopefully, solve pedagogical problems that already exist. If the introduction of technology fits in with existing practice it is more likely to be embraced whereas if it is at odds with the pedagogical position of the teacher then they are likely to resist it, even if there is potential in the long run for a new pedagogy to emerge.

11 Reasons why teachers don't use technology | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
A recent survey reported in the UK newspaper the The Telegraph stated that as many as half of the teachers consulted for the survey said they rarely use technology in the classroom.

This came as no surprise to me, but what did surprise me when I shared the article with my professional networks, was the number of trainers and teachers who actually blamed lazy and unmotivated teachers for this.

Human life is about more than work and productivity. The value of a human life is not measured by that person’s demand in the workforce. Making use of technology for educational purposes is one of the most challenging but required activities teachers need to include in their classes nowadays. If we are referring to a language teaching, this is even more relevant, since as it is known, practice outside classroom is key to increase the linguistic proficiency of our students. Nik Peachey, through his blog, supports in-service and in development teachers to do this, adding outstanding content that, most likely, will help language teachers to make good use of TICS for educational goals

How teachers and stduents use digital tools includes tact and thoughtfulness. The word technology is about a thoughtful conversation and wisdom, not about the tools themselves. If, as Maslow suggested, we only use a hammer, everything begins to look like a nail. We have the wrong tool for the situation.

How Important is use of Technology in Education

How Important is use of Technology in Education | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
There were a huge number of positives and negatives to education technology. But, gradually as technology was embraced by the educational institutes, they realized the importance of technology in education. Its positives outnumbered the negatives and now, with technology, education has taken a whole new meaning that it leaves us with no doubt that our educational system has been transformed owing to the ever-advancing technology. Technology and education are a great combination if used together with a right reason and vision.

Why Digital Learning is Reshaping Education

Why Digital Learning is Reshaping Education | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

The ways in which students learn are changing rapidly thanks to technology, and both students and teachers will benefit from it. There are several specific changes that we can expect to see as digital learning takes over education. For one, the way teachers present information and how students work with that information has changed. Students are asked to be more hands-on and collaborative than ever before. There are also new skills that students must learn, such as digital literacy.
