New Report from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Reveals Increasing Educator Confidence, Optimism around Digital Resources in the Classroom

63% of educator's report that colleagues are the number one resource they turn to when it comes to learning about educational technology implementation. About half (47%) of educators rely on formal professional development from their school district, while close to two-thirds (63%) of educators report using their own money to engage in professional development opportunities. In addition, educators indicate they could use additional resources to help them more effectively implement educational technology.

Why Virtual Reality is the Saving Grace of Education

Why Virtual Reality is the Saving Grace of Education | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
With VR there is no coasting option of just sitting and listening. Students have to interpret and examine, in real time, the subject matter that is portrayed in front of them. In this way, VR is helping educators recapture class interest, boosting their efforts in the process.
Nik Peachey's insight:

This is a bit evangelical and focuses rather too much on the motivational aspect of VR, but still worth a quick read.

Here’s How We Can Reinvent the Classroom for the Digital Age

Here’s How We Can Reinvent the Classroom for the Digital Age | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Today, the blackboard has become a whiteboard; chalk has become a magic marker; the slates that students used have been replaced by notebooks; and classes have sometimes gotten smaller. Little else has changed. True, some schools are providing their students with laptops, and teachers are increasingly using technology and encouraging collaboration. But the methods are essentially the same—with the teacher dictating learning.

If you can't find anything about the information you seek to assess on any of the fact checker sites, then the next suggestion is to “go upstream”. That is, try to identify the original source of the information and consider its validity. This is where things really get going – the first technique is helpful and convenient, but this one is more fundamental.

Visual literacy in English language teaching

Visual literacy in English language teaching | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

Visual literacy is the ability to create meaning from images. It involves decoding visuals using our own cultural and personal filters. This doesn’t just apply to static images. We can apply visual literacy to films, websites and social media platforms. In this post I’ll be outlining a few ways we can unlock images and generate learner output.

The Future of Education: Transcending the Status Quo | edCircuit

The Future of Education: Transcending the Status Quo | edCircuit | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Perhaps the main reason for this disappointing impact is that the inclusion of technologies has done little to change the “tell and practice” approach to teaching and learning — the predominant pedagogical practice of our time. In this model, teachers tell students what knowledge is and what knowledge is worth knowing; students meanwhile invest their vast capacity for creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration by memorizing and practicing what they were told. The overarching goal of this model is simply for students to accurately repeat the information they were told.

Opinion: Forget “digital natives.” Here’s how kids are really using the Internet | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
By challenging the assumption that every child growing up today is a one-size-fits all digital native, we can make sure each of them can find their own way to relate to technology — whether using it to accomplish basic tasks or to create new technologies and worlds. Being aware of our kids’ differences now is what could help keep them from drifting apart.
Nik Peachey's insight:

An interesting take on the 'digital natives' debate.

Chris Carter's comment, July 5, 9:37 PM
A much more nuanced view, and one that I appreciate. I have long called so-called digital natives "digital naives" because the majority of kids only know enough about tech to use it to accomplish what they wish to accomplish. Tech does not really come any easier for them. Tech is simply more common to them.

A Longitudinal Examination of Preservice Teachers' Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge in the Context of Undergraduate Teacher Education

This study used longitudinal data to investigate the development of pre-service teachers Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK)throughout their initial teacher education program in the United States. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected at four different points intime. Findings indicated that teacher preparation experiences collectively provided preservice teach with opportunities to develop their knowl-edge of teaching with technology from their freshman to their junior/senioryear. Opportunities to develop and retain knowledge gains over time, however, were limited in the absence of intentional educational technology coursework. Findings have implications for the design of teacher education programs on the use of technology.

The Importance of Teaching Technology to Teachers

The Importance of Teaching Technology to Teachers | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Teachers are hungry to use technology in their classrooms. But they don’t. While part of this lack of usage stems from problems with education reform that emerges from administrators and education boards not fully understanding the technologies themselves, another part of teachers not using technology in the classroom comes from the simple fact that they don’t know how to use the technologies, let alone how to incorporate these technologies into their classrooms.

All of these resources make sense on the surface, however many teachers fail to recognise that Project Based Learning is a process of sustained and deep inquiry. "Although the book contains many practical examples, it is more than a cookbook on how to teach. It addresses the following questions: is the nature of knowledge changing, and how do different views on the nature of knowledge result in different approaches to teaching? what is the science and research that can best help me in my teaching? how do I decide whether my courses should be face-to-face, blended or fully online? what strategies work best when teaching in a technology-rich environment? what methods of teaching are most effective for blended and online classes? how do I make choices among all the available media, whether text, audio, video, computer, or social media, in order to benefit my students and my subject? how do I maintain high quality in my teaching in a rapidly changing learning environment while managing my workload? what are the real possibilities for teaching and learning using MOOCs, OERS, open textbooks?"
