Education Week: Study Finds Sudden Insights Key to Learning Words

Education Week: Study Finds Sudden Insights Key to Learning Words | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
When it comes to understanding what words mean, researchers say the "ah ha" moment trumps flash-card drills. The study’s findings suggest that children—and, in fact, all new language learners—can build up concrete vocabulary from interacting with a complex learning environment, not just repeated exposure to words in isolation.

Pronounce Live - Pronunciation Feedback

Pronounce Live - Pronunciation Feedback | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

Pronounce Live is a web application for pronunciation practice. You can listen to authentic speech models read any text or words, record your own voice for comparison and receive immediate feedback.

Color coding will mark words to focus on, and you also get an overall score for your pronunciation. Compete against yourself, the perfect score is only a syllable away!

Nik Peachey's insight:

This is a great tool to get students working autonomously on their pronunciation. Even works for languages other than English.

Nando Castellanos's curator insight, May 10, 11:11 AM
Since now a days more people seek to learn or practice a new language on the web, this web application plays an excellent role. One of the major factors that affects learning a new language on an application, is to have feedback on the pronunciation and this is precisely the function of "Pronounce Live". Thus, people can get an important benefit since they can improve their pronunciation without having somebody in front to correct them.

The quantified self and the gamification of academic research through social networks

The quantified self and the gamification of academic research through social networks | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
The ResearchGate score is based on a rather complicated summation of number of publications, impact factor and user activity. The largely opaque calculation of the score has led to it being suggested as a good example of a “bad metric”. The ResearchGate score is then compared with other researchers’ achievements and the user is informed of their relative position (e.g. “better than 50% of all registered researchers”).
Nik Peachey's insight:

This is something I've been expecting for quite some time.

3 Misconceptions About Innovation in Education

3 Misconceptions About Innovation in Education | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
As I have stated numerous times, innovation should not be reserved for the few, but become the norm in education. It trickles into how we do everything, whether that is assessment practices, leadership, professional learning, how we use technology, and so many other areas, but ultimately in teaching and learning. The first step to getting people to move there is to see that this is not an individual effort, but a team sport.
Nik Peachey's insight:

Quite a lot I both agree and disagree with in here.

Collaboration in Augmented Reality

Collaboration in Augmented Reality | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
AR systems can be used to create unique collaborative experiences. For example, co-located users can see shared 3D virtual objects that they interact with, or a user can annotate the live video view of a remote worker, enabling them to collaborate at a distance. The overall goal is to augment the face-to-face collaborative experience, or to enable remote people to feel that they are virtually co-located.

La realidad virtual es y será una herramienta educativa muy poderosa que permita la inmersión total y por tanto una experiencia multisensorial cuasi real en un ambiente diseñado para el aprendizaje. La gran limitante aún son los costos del desarrollo de los contenidos digitales. Allí aparece su competidor (aunque en realidad son complementadores) : la realidad aumentada que puede incorporar directamente a la realidad elementos digitales que hagan de cada espacio físico una experiencia de aprendizaje mucho más excitante.

The Power Of Visuals In E-Learning

The Power Of Visuals In E-Learning | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
The majority of people won’t watch a video that is more than four minutes long, will click away from a page after just five to ten seconds if it doesn’t hold their attention, and check their smartphones an average of nine times in an hour. This really has an impact on learning. The traditional classroom format is quickly becoming redundant, as technology and e-learning takes over as the preferred means of training and development.
Nik Peachey's insight:

Seems like a no brainer to me.
