The digital divide: a tale of two schools

The digital divide: a tale of two schools | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

Along with direct experience of the digital divide, my experience showed me that the ubiquity of mobile phones constitutes an enormous but unexploited potential to bring learning to a huge number of people, including marginalized groups such as migrants or refugees. Indeed, some basic content, applications and even simple learning programmes based on text messaging could be developed and reach students through a technology that they already possess.

What’s the point of education if Google can tell us anything?

What’s the point of education if Google can tell us anything? | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

Such debate about the place and purpose of online searching in learning and assessments is not new. But rather than thinking of ways to prevent students from cheating or plagiarising in their assessed pieces of work, maybe our obsession with the “authenticity” of their coursework or assessment is missing another important educational point.

How Technology Can Increase Rigor In The Classroom

Technology that increases rigor promotes higher order thinking, not rote level tasks. There are times it is appropriate to do lower level tasks, but they should build to higher levels of thinking. In other words, look for technology that is more than a basic worksheet on the screen.
Nik Peachey's insight:

I guess there are some connections here to 'demand high' teaching.

This has been clear since late last century - the power of technology to shift control of learning to the learner - and thus lead to transformation in learning systems. The point here I guess is that limited access to technology need not limit this power to transform.

Virtual Debate: 7 Advantages of Online Discussions

Virtual Debate: 7 Advantages of Online Discussions | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

How to facilitate such discussions is confusing to many teachers, and online discussion threads and chatrooms may be seen as a poor substitute for the “real” thing, an evil necessity of the online class. However, although there are some barriers such as its more decontextualized nature, in comparison to face-to-face discussion, there are advantages that are unique to the online discussion that can be built on by the instructor while the drawbacks are minimized.

5 Surprising Changes in Horizon's 2015 Report on the Future of K–12 Tech

5 Surprising Changes in Horizon's 2015 Report on the Future of K–12 Tech | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

This year's list provided more than a few surprises, with new additions to the list, along with several technologies and strategies that dropped off completely.

Nik Peachey's insight:

I'm not really sure how surprising these are to you. Number 5 would be a nice one though if that really happens over the next couple of years. I also think that number 1 may be wrong as I've seen a lot of adoption of gamification and a it can work really well.

Norton Gusky's curator insight, July 30, 7:36 AM

While the report drops "Gaming" I'm seeing a real growth in this area. The Internet of Things is a bit too abstract, but with projects underway at Carnegie Mellon and elsewhere this might regain some momentum. Maker Spaces have definitely gained K-12 attention. Badging is still something that seems to work best for the out-of-school world, but in the next few years there may be growth in this trend.

Virtual Realities

Virtual Realities | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

Making any sort of prediction for the future of technology is fraught with  difficulty and Chris Dede’s analysis published as 'Planning for
Neomillennial Learning Styles' confronts this as well as any. Written in
2005 it hints at things yet to come and the possibility of virtual reality
environments to allow for ‘situated learning’ to occur within classrooms
without access to exotic locations or facilities. Chris’ emphasis is on
immersion in a virtual world, a digitally constructed reality
