Analyzing iPad Myths in Education -IPAD 4 SCHOOLS

Analyzing iPad Myths in Education -IPAD 4 SCHOOLS | Learning Technology Update SGHE | Scoop.it

"Many obstacles that iPad cynics attempt to put in place when discussing a roll-out are based on untruths, poorly research and/or out-of-date information. I was delighted when my Canadian Twitter friend and fellow iPad blogger, Steve Lai decided to join forces, as we’ve done before, to combat this dis-information that floats around the education profession worldwide."

Don’t use technology.… Do use technology.… - Mark Anderson's Blog

Don’t use technology.… Do use technology.… - Mark Anderson's Blog | Learning Technology Update SGHE | Scoop.it

"Don’t get me wrong – given my Twitter ID it’s a given that I believe very strongly in using technology to support and enhance learning. The OED states that an evangelist is “a person who seeks to convert others to the Christian faith, especially by public preaching”, so ok… I might not be doing the Christian faith bit, but as an ‘ICT Evangelist’ I do believe that technology has the power to change our world and certainly the learning that takes place in our classrooms and beyond.

There’s a problem though. There is a dichotomy of experiences, skills, beliefs and abilities when it comes to using technology in our classrooms. It’s written in to the United States Declaration of Independence that, “all men are born equal”, but it’s certainly not true when it comes to the experiences that our students receive in their lessons at the hands of some of our teachers and that’s before you even think about entering technology into the equation."

Higher education: our MP3 is the mooc

Higher education: our MP3 is the mooc | Learning Technology Update SGHE | Scoop.it
Academics have watched the internet change the music industry, books and news. And yet, now it's happening in higher education, we are about to screw it up, says Clay Shirky
Barbara Gardner's insight:

Fascinating read

My key phrases:

The large lecture isn't a tool for producing intellectual joy; it's a tool for reducing the expense of introductory classes.

The very things the US News list of top colleges prizes – low average class size, ratio of staff to students – mean that any institution that tries to create a cost-effective education will move down the list. This is why most of the early work on moocs is coming out of Stanford and Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As the academic and games designer Ian Bogost has said, moocs are marketing for elite schools.

there's a new [motto] that now hangs over many [colleges]: Quae Non Possunt Non Manent. Things That Can't Last Don't.
