Phil Hill of e-Literate over at mfeldstein.com has updated their Sankey-like growth diagram for learning management systems in the US for 2014. The story in the US is slightly different than that of the international market with growth dominated by Canvas by Instructure and no movement for Moodle. Compared to Edutechnica’s data where international data showed nearly the opposite: Moodle gains and Canvas steady.
The diagram tells a very interesting story for both open source and proprietary systems including the swelling and thinning of Blackboard through acquisitions. Another insight is the shift away from, and now back to a proliferation of platforms with the introduction of new proprietary, competency-based, and MOOC focused learning management systems which can be seen at the top of the diagram.
