This is an American article, but it does pose an interesting question about pitting teachers and students against each other using a service like Turnitin. If students are taught how not to plagiarise, this becomes far less of an issue. I think Turnitin and other similar software is definitely needed, but should be used like a scalpel, not a hammer!

How to Create Videos to Capture Your Audience

How to Create Videos to Capture Your Audience | Learning Technology | Scoop.it

When it comes to marketing strategy, videos are powerful. How powerful? On Facebook, for example, videos are shared 12 times more than non-video posts. And let’s not forget YouTube, the second largest search engine in the world (after Google, of course). The ability of videos to increase user engagement is unsurpassed.

According to YouTube’s statistics page, they get over 800 million unique visitors each month, users view more than 4 billion hours of video each month and upload 72 hours of video every minute. That’s a lot of potential for your video....

5 Creative Uses Of PowerPoint Presentations You Haven’t Explored Yet

5 Creative Uses Of PowerPoint Presentations You Haven’t Explored Yet | Learning Technology | Scoop.it

Death by PowerPoint is a popular term. It’s unfair that PowerPoint gets the stick as there are more than a few presentation tools around. As anyone who has taken the pains to make a memorable PowerPoint presentation will tell you – the secret of the steak is in the sizzle. The sizzle also comes and stops at creativity. If you have creativity by your side, you can use PowerPoint as your canvas.

5 Creative Uses Of PowerPoint Presentations

Karen Ford's curator insight, November 4, 2013 12:53 PM

I think "death by PowerPoint" is used so often because so many users have not "taken the pains to make a memorable..." presentation and the concept of creativity might not have even been considered. Not totally sure what the answer is, but I do believe that if more individuals could have their eyes opened to the potential that PowerPoint has, we might be able to get passed the "death" issue. That means we have to get the great ideas to the teachers and  their students... not just telling them, but perhaps showing them...

"In their attempts to establish a 1:1 program for the year 6 class, St Oliver Plunket has recently held a series of workshops in order to develop their students skills before they were officially given management of their very own devices.

The workshops were particularly centered around teaching students about some tips and tricks for managing their iPad, email etiquette, successful searching and copyright and creative commons. I personally was thrilled by the efforts these people from St Oliver are putting into making their 1:1 program a success and I hope other schools would do the same."

Goodbye Essay, Hello Podcast | Dialogue

Goodbye Essay, Hello Podcast | Dialogue | Learning Technology | Scoop.it

One of the greatest conflicts between new and old literacies is many educators’ continuing belief that students’ analytical skills are not properly developed through the use of new media. There is some justification for this: Many student-created new media works are simplistic mishmashes of audio and video clips with no thesis or rationale. New media is used more as a toy than as an educational tool. It is no wonder that many teachers, uncomfortable with new media to begin with, see it as harming student literacy.

These are great character traits for any student to develop.

However, students who are educated in the home-based context, have the distinct advantage, in that they are not cocooned in the cloistered environment of a school for 13 years. Rather they are involved in the real-world contexts of family and the marketplace and thus are able to cultivate themselves in real-world settings.

Notetaking In The Digital Classroom: A Blended Learning Approach ~ TeachThought

Notetaking In The Digital Classroom: A Blended Learning Approach ~ TeachThought | Learning Technology | Scoop.it

The Cornell Notes strategy is one possible model students can use, in addition to combination notes, REAP strategy, and others. When used in combination with technology, students are able to activate key brain areas during learning, while also retaining critical information for future review.

How Noteaking Is Changing

"It’d be easy to fall victim to hyperbole here and suggest that notetaking is the stuff of electricity and holograms, but that’s only partly true. Today, 40% of students prefer a mix of physical and digital notes. In the digital classroom then, the primary shift parallels blended learning: a mix of physical and electronic information that serves as a compromise between “old” and “new” learning.

"In the digital classroom, recording pens, tablets, laptops, audio software, and social media make recording, reviewing, sharing, and storing these notes different than it was even 10 years ago. The infographic below explores how."

Karen Barlow's curator insight, April 11, 7:27 AM

Note-taking is a huge thing in education.  Learning a whole heap of systems and theory at work has made me consider and compare alternatives the impact the use of technology has had on taking notes.  As a very kinsethetic learner, taking notes has always played a huge part in learning for me. So is typing the same as writing?  Typing works for me - not only are my notes easier to read at a later date, as I think the words as I type them somehow this connects my fingers to my brain and I seem to absorb and take things on board or transfer the knowledge to my brain [the cognitivits would be happy].  Advancements in technology enable my mind-maps to be included as part of my notes, and I can easily add book-marks etc to make finding a particular point so much easier.  Comments my learning mates or the facilitator make are also easier to incorporate into my own notes - even in a different colour text. Have I learnt more, better or faster? The jury is still out on these questions.  The implications of this as a teacher  is something definitely worth pondering further.

From the original article by Justin Reich and Beth Holland on MindShift: "What would a math class look like where students learn to compute, prove, derive, and intuit, as well as to discern and appreciate mathematical beauty?

What about a history class where students maintained a portfolio of beautiful artifacts and ideas from multiple periods?

How might efforts to curate benefit from the portability and ubiquity of mobile devices?

What would a “relevance portfolio” look like, where students catalog their daily encounters with ideas or experiences? What other kinds of portfolios could students create over the course of their academic career?"

If you are curious to get a glimpse at how tablets and their apps can be utilized to leverage curation for your classroom learning objectives, then this is definitely a good read.

You get a good introduction with some interesting historical facts about curation and about what it could be done with it in the real of education, and then you are provided with a good number of examples and tools that you can start to use right away.

Informative. Resourceful. 8/10
