Randall's Video Snapshots: For ESL/EFL Students

Randall's Video Snapshots: For ESL/EFL Students | Learning technologies for EFL | Scoop.it

Short videos with spontaneous speech on high-frequency topic, slips of the tongue, background noise and all: more authentic listening practice for intermediate ESL learners.

Randall says

"There are three main objectives for the videos:

(1) add new materials to support existing content on my site through the recycling of vocabulary and topics (e.g., a video on trains is linked to a conversation called, Train Tickets: Getting Around Tokyo),

(2) provide more visual multimedia content that can aid students in the language-learning process, and

(3) share my own personal life experiences that might be of benefit to those who want to see new things (for example, how many people have camped in freezing, snowy conditions . . . AND had fun?).

Therefore, I directly link these videos to my library of other listening activities so students see the same themes again and again, and thus learners have plenty of practice on a particular topic before moving on to something else."

Free ESL Stories and Exercises

Ron Chang Lee is active in TESOL in California, with a special interest in artificial intelligence for language learning.

Here he has produced a large number of listening passages with text quizzes to test comprehension and grammar.

"Free short English stories for ESL students, with grammar, comprehension, and dictation exercises, created for ESL learners who want to practice reading and improve their reading skills. Students can also choose to listen to the stories."

It's a long way from the communicative approach, but for motivated intermediate learners who want to work on pronunciation, reading/listening comprehension and grammar, one story a day will take you six months ...

The Extensive Reading Pages

The Extensive Reading Pages | Learning technologies for EFL | Scoop.it

"This site is a repository for information on Extensive Reading, with an emphasis on its application to Second or Foreign Language Learning."

Thomas Robb has saved this material from a number of JALT conferences.  You can find reading resources and teaching aids, links to research supporting extensive reading in second language learning and teaching (Bell, Krashen, Waring), and advice on setting up an extensive reading programme.

Worth a look if you haven't come across these arguments, or for teachers who want to get their learners reading more.
