"The concept of shopping has shifted from owning stuff to buying into new ideas.

 

So is technology the culprit, then? Though it often seems to be the driver, technology cannot be the cause either, because it is simply an extension of the way we think. New tech is created because someone has decided to think differently about the world. This may, in turn, spur new technology, but the new thinking is always first.

 

And there's the culprit.

 

Humanity is experiencing an evolution in consciousness. We are starting to think differently about what it means to "own" something. This is why a similar ambivalence towards ownership is emerging in all sorts of areas, from car-buying to music listening to entertainment consumption. Though technology facilitates this evolution and new generations champion it, the big push behind it all is that our thinking is changing."

"In a television special premiering this week, Jerry Seinfeld deconstructs the comic magic of Abbott & Costello’s famous baseball routine."

"'Who’s on First?' plays, of course, on a series of misunderstandings that is carried by rat-a-tat wordplay. Costello cannot grasp why Abbott’s roster includes Who at first base, What at second, I Don’t Know at third, a pitcher named Tomorrow and a catcher named Today.

Costello is as addled as Abbott is certain.

What makes it funny, Seinfeld says, is that neither man is listening to the other — and that each man is totally convinced of his perspective.

Costello: 'You know the guys’ names on the baseball team?'

Abbott: 'Yes.'

Costello: 'Well, go ahead. Who’s on first?'

Abbott: 'Yes.'

"High school students in the U.S. want more technology in classrooms, as well as more hands-on projects and one-on-one tutoring, but less lectures, according to a new survey called "Learn Now, Lecture Later" from CDW-G, a company that provides technology to the government, education, and healthcare industries.

CDW-G surveyed 1,015 students, faculty, and IT staff in May and June of 2012. About half of those surveyed were from high schools, while the other half were from colleges, universities, community colleges, and technical schools.

Sixty-nine percent of students surveyed at both the high school and college level said they wanted more technology in the classroom. At the top of high school students' technology wishlist were laptops and netbooks, tablets, smartphones, digital content, and recorded class lectures."

"The National Paideia Center, which has developed extensive materials on using seminars in classrooms, defines a Socratic seminar as a ‘collaborative, intellectual dialogue facilitated with open-ended questions about a text.’

Student Handouts: Open-Ended Questions and/or Critical Reasoning Analysis Sheet, Discussion Partner Evaluation

Purpose

The purpose of a Socratic Seminar is to achieve a deeper understanding about the ideas and values in a text. In the Seminar, participants systematically question and examine issues and principles related to a particular content, and articulate different points-of-view. The group conversation assists participants in constructing meaning through disciplined analysis, interpretation, listening, and participation.

Background

In a Socratic Seminar, the participants carry the burden of responsibility for the quality of the discussion. Good discussions occur when participants study the text closely in advance, listen actively, share their ideas and questions in response to the ideas and questions of others, and search for evidence in the text to support their ideas. The discussion is not about right answers; it is not a debate. Students are encouraged to think out loud and to exchange ideas openly while examining ideas in a rigorous, thoughtful, manner."

Storify will be used to demonstrate design multimodal/multimedia research-based assignments, due to its features such as Hashtag specific Tweets, Flicker and Instagram images, Soundcloud audios and Youtube videos.  

Most of the expected outcomes of the workshop can be associated to teaching and learning in general.

 

Important ideas:

 

a) Storify has a great educational potential;

b) You can organize Storify content based on theme or topic;

c) You can easily embed Hashtag specific Tweets, Flicker and Instagram images, Soundcloud audios and Youtube videos;

d) It helps students develop research, synthesis and presentation skills;

Scientists have created an ‘early signs timeline’ for Alzheimer’s disease that they believe could help experts detect the condition up to 25 years before it strikes. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, looked at 128 people with a family history of early Alzheimer’s.

 

The participants were all selected from the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer's Network, a research centre for those who are genetically predestined to develop the degenerative disease, and considered to have (at least) a 50% chance of inheriting one of three gene mutations that cause the disease.

"The video is called 'Seven Minutes of Terror,' and describes, with the suspense and cinematography of a movie preview, what will happen next month when a one-ton spacecraft launched in November smacks into Mars.

'We’ve got literally seven minutes to get from the top of the atmosphere to the surface of Mars, going from 13,000 miles an hour to zero,' Tom Rivellini, a NASA engineer, tells the camera with a grim face and deadpan delivery. 'If any one thing doesn’t work just right, it’s game over.'

Posted last month on YouTube, the video has succeeded in an area where NASA has a mixed track record: using social media and other tools of the 21st century to whip up interest in space exploration.

Despite minimal publicity, 'Seven Minutes' has been racking up views and attracting droll commentary on the impending arrival of the rover, which goes by the name of Curiosity.

'Come on, NASA,' one person said in a comment on YouTube, 'All that is missing in this blockbuster trailer is Megan Fox as the chief scientist.'"

Team Symbiosis of Greece designed software to provide augmented reality therapy for Alzheimer’s patients.

The Future Of Education: An Online University That Charges $199 Per Month For Unlimited Classes

"'The higher education system in the U.S. is in trouble. Jobs for college graduates are in short supply, and student debt is becoming an ever-larger burden. There is at least one school that’s getting it right, though--it’s profitable, growing 30% to 40% each year, charging students less than $500 per month, and operating on a competency-based model that allows students to complete courses at their own pace.

That’s what’s happening at Western Governor’s University, a little-known online school. In almost any other industry, there would be 10 copycats right behind such a successful model, but there isn’t one here. Financial aid regulation in the for-profit education world (where credit has to be earned 8)based on so-called "seat time") and resistance from traditional professors in the nonprofit world are powerful roadblocks."

What Captures Your Attention Controls Your Life

"To learn about your own attention patterns, examine someone else's. Most motivational speakers, self-help writers, therapists and pharmacologists encourage us to focus on "me." They suggest that we look inward to understand and improve ourselves for a happier, better life. That's not wrong; it is just incomplete. Instead of just asking, 'What most preoccupies me? Does it make the world seem welcoming or withholding?' reach out to someone else. Be the best listener they've had in months. This is the first and most basic ingredient in any interaction. Simply gazing steadily and warmly at that person, nodding at times and reiterating what you heard will activate an empathic, mirror-neuron response in both of you.

Giving and receiving undivided attention, even briefly, is the least that one individual can do for another — and sometimes the most. And yet, attending to others doesn't just help them — it helps us, by evoking responses that help the listener feel cared for, useful, and connected to the larger world. Paying attention may be an individual effort, but it's also a kind of social cement that holds groups together and helps them feel part of something greater than themselves. It's not always easy, but you can improve with practice — and find yourself becoming more flexible, more open to new ideas, and better able to resonate with others. Inevitably that leads to a richer, more meaningful life."

Small Group Discussion Protocols (20 Examples)

"Each of these protocols will have a “time required” section which is my [Dakin Burdick, Center for Teaching Excellence, Endicott College, 2011] best guess of how much time each will take. That estimated time is based on students having about a minute to respond individually to any issue. That limit was chosen on the assumption that the small group discussion is intended to prepare the students for the large group discussion. If the small group discussion is intended to develop meaningful outputs, the times will probably be longer.

It will also list an “Online equivalent” for the exercise. When selecting the tools you wish to use online, you will first have to decide whether an activity works best synchronously or asynchronously. In general, I tend to aim at asynchronous interaction first, because it allows participants around the world to log in at their convenience. I like the idea of global conversations, and they tend to be richer and more diverse. Asynchronous discussions also give participants more time to think about their about their responses, and give shy or contemplative participants a better chance to contribute. Asynchronous interactions take a long time though (several days at least), which may lead you to choose synchronous interactions instead. Synchronous interactions are quicker and because they often involve audio or video, they can more quickly establish a sense of community and a perceived rapport with the instructor."
