Great approaches.Teacher librarians should be responsive to the return to inquiry learning and help restore passion to teaching and joy to learning. TLs have all the tools, spaces and skill sets to help! Make the Learning Commons whole school.

The tradition in education has been not to ask the students what they think or want, but rather for adult educators to design the system and curriculum by themselves, using their "superior" knowledge and experience.

Just as speaking is the outcome of listening, so writing is the outcome of reading, not the other way round. Listening to the student should also include "listening" to their writing. ie., analyse what they are saying and how they are doing it.  When students evaluate their own work, the teacher should listen and guide them to ways of improving it, whether it be punctuation, paragraphing, spelling, or word or subject knowledge.  This is how we bring students on board and empower them to learn.

Listening to students has two aspects; listening to what they say orally, and 'listening' to their writing which is only another way of talking, only through a code. Just as learning to speak is tied closely to listening to what is said and being exposed to words that help one to think better, so writing is the same  and relies on reading "or listening" to what others say and how they say it to express clear meaning. The two subjects, reading and writing, are closlely intertwined yet we compartmentalize them in the literacy curriculum. An example of adults thinking they know what is best for children.

This is powerful stuff: How students think about learning makes a difference in what they’re able to achieve. Groundbreaking research conducted by Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck has shown that when students take on a growth mindset – one in which they believe that the brain is malleable, and they can improve at a task with effort – they handle setbacks better and improve academically.

I'm gratified to see research bearing this out. Now if we could just figure out a way to keep that growth mindset in place when kids go home to negative environments...

Average is an interesting concept. Pinning students down to numbers or percentages in terms of what they can achieve does them a disservice and never tells the real story.

Each student has a jagged learning profile. They have strengths, averages and challenges. If you design learning for the average, you design it for nobody. We have created learning environments where we can not expect learners to do what we want them to do.

 

The average hurts everyone. Designing average destroys talents in two ways:

> The existing educational environment can not challenge learners as it creates an environment where they become bored and sometimes dropout. 

> It means that your weaknesses will make it harder for you to see your talent.  

 

It is all about nurturing individual potential.

why [has] technology, to date, had very little impact on improved learning outcomes? This could be because we continue to use technology to reinforce 19th century teaching practice to meet out-dated assessment models. Most of the world’s curriculum and assessment systems are based around fact recall rather than actually demonstrating that you have learned something and can deploy it within a problem-solving situation.

Our  education system is nothing more than child-care with some 

indoctrination thown in.


See/hear "The Wall" by Pink Floyd  (40+ years ago.)


Let the children play until they are old enough to decide what they are interested in learning. That's completely different than training them from Day 1 to "sit still, be quiet, and obey authority." Training a 5-year old to become a "worker" or 'Businessman"  is not education, but it may be child abuse.
