No Longer a Luxury: Digital Literacy Can’t Wait

Digital literacy is about more than just adding technology into the teaching we already do. The following common teaching practices that we have seen in classrooms as researchers and as parents of school-age children do not help develop digital literacy and may even kill students’ motivation to develop their savvy use of technology and the Internet. We must stop these practices. Immediately.

Bonnie I agree parents are important today so many seem to be tuned out to the needs of there children, it is a lot more than just material needs, that parents need to provide, and with the prevalence of single parent homes, it is even harder. I feel as much for the parent of these homes as I do for the children it can not be easy wearing all the hats.

I have long hours of work in places where the parents did not or would not participate. Sometimes they did not know. Some groups like Wired Safety , have Mom groups.. or PTA groups. Thanks for your comment.

What If We Flipped Online Learning? - Edudemic

What If We Flipped Online Learning? - Edudemic | Learning skills and literacies | Scoop.it

flipped online learning would involve a larger focus on the student producing the learning materials and having an online instructor be more of a ‘guide on the side’ as it were. Rather than watching videos and taking a quiz, you’d have a robust discussion, have students create projects to share with classmates, and generate more discussion out of that.

Helps not hinders in active learning“@Inspire_Futures:Tech In Education:Do your students have the knowledge? #edtech http://t.co/2kdX0Aym9Q”;
Eeva Kurttila-Matero's insight:

"

Technology can be something that hinders, or helps a student to learn better. Using technology in education can be an active process where it creates rich learning experiences. However, it can also be a passive process that does not necessarily promote any kind of critical thinking, meaning making, or metacognition. Teachers are needed online, in person, books, modules, videos, social media,  etc… at the right times to help students  take their learning to the next level that will improve thinking." Avoid The Hype: Online Learning's Transformational Potential

Avoid The Hype: Online Learning's Transformational Potential | Learning skills and literacies | Scoop.it

In Larry Cuban’s recent piece in theWashington Post, “Why K-12 online learning isn’t really revolutionizing teaching,” he in essence says that our research showing that online learning is adisruptive innovation that has the potential to transform K–12 education into a student-centric learning design that can allow each student to realize his or her fullest potential is unfortunate hype from academic gurus.

What’s unfortunate is Cuban’s misrepresentation of our research to hype his argument.
