Optimism Overcomes Adversity

Optimism Overcomes Adversity | Learning Languages made funky | Scoop.it
Research by psychologists including Martin Seligman of the University of Pennsylvania indicates that optimism is both a natural trait and a learned skill. The executives I interviewed picked themselves up and got on with business instead of wallowing in self-pity, just like Smart, Lin, Garvey, and Zinardi.

Optimism correlates with resilience, strong coping techniques, and a sense of well-being in times of adversity. In fact, productive optimism can be a very healthy leadership characteristic. There are at least six things you can do to promote productive optimism.

How To Design Your Own Infographics

How To Design Your Own Infographics | Learning Languages made funky | Scoop.it

Infographics seem to be a real trend today, with new ones popping up daily on all sorts of subjects. From mortgages to ice cream, estimating software to infographics about infographics, there is very little now that hasn't been 'visualised' in some form. Many people don't realise that the term information graphic, or 'infographic' was first coined over 100 years ago, with the Coxcomb chart by Florence Nightingale in 1857 being one of earliest recognised examples. They have existed in many forms since then, but only in the past few years have infographics developed into the art form we know today.

What Do Emotions Have to Do with Learning?

What Do Emotions Have to Do with Learning? | Learning Languages made funky | Scoop.it

"When parents and teachers consider how children learn, it’s usually the intellectual aspects of the activity they have in mind." This article discusses "the role of feelings in learning" and states "that complex learning is almost inevitably  'an emotionally charged experience.'"

It also turns out that negative emotions also play a productive role in learning. To learn more about how emotions may impact learning take the time to read this article.

Creative automaticity

In language speaking terms, this automatization process means being able to draw on a set of memorised procedures in order to take part in real-time interaction. Without these procedures (or routines) you would have to assemble each utterance from scratch, word by word, at the obvious expense of fluency.

Another Way to Think about Learning

Another Way to Think about Learning | Learning Languages made funky | Scoop.it

As we industrialized learning and created schools, we needed to measure the system’s efficacy and each child’s progress. What you really want to measure is curiosity, imagination, passion, creativity, and the ability to see things from multiple points of view. But these are hard to measure other than one on one, and even then, the assessment will be subjective. So instead, we measure what a child knows, and from that we infer that the child has learned how to learn. This is the real aspiration we have for our children: learning learning.
