A Flipped Classroom? Or Should It Be Sideways? | Edudemic

A Flipped Classroom? Or Should It Be Sideways? | Edudemic | Learning in blended environments | Scoop.it

Since it is a less radical departure from what students and parents expect, there’s less stress and uncertainty. If you fear that students may not have access to video lectures or get distracted from learning while on their own time, then teacher resources and equipment available in most schools solve this logistics problem. Wealth and home situation do not become a barrier to learning.

Blended Learning Innovations: 10 Major Trends

Blended Learning Innovations: 10 Major Trends | Learning in blended environments | Scoop.it

"Blended learning is constantly evolving. And most of the innovations and refinements have been developed to support student-centered learning. That means leveraging technology into learning activities, in and out of the classroom.

There is mounting evidence that complementing or replacing lectures with student-centric, technology-enabled active learning strategies and learning guidance—rather than memorization and repetition—improves learning, supports knowledge retention, and raises achievement. These new student-centered blended learning methods inspire engagement, and are a way to connect with every student right where they are while supporting progress toward grade level standards."

Sarah-Jane Davies's curator insight, September 17, 2013 5:41 AM

Technology is advancing continously; therefore it makes sense for educational systems to keep up with technology. This should be done because its is predominately the youth who enjoy advancing with technology. Therefore if more education systems use iTunesU students will be able to learn their work efficiently since they will understand it more easily than a dull textbook. If institutions adopt this new tool it will make vast changes in both the teacher's and students's education. This tool is very easy to use and is more convenient than compiling numerous notes and books. The only downside is that iTunesU is an Apple product. Therefore only those with iPads,iPhones or any other Apple products will be able to use iTunesU. Apple products are not necessarily cheap; therefore not all institutions would be able to use this new handy tool.

6 Things Teachers Do to Flip the Classroom

6 Things Teachers Do to Flip the Classroom | Learning in blended environments | Scoop.it

Get 6 Real World Examples of a Flipped Classroom from Subject Experts.

The Flipped Classroom model is changing the ways students learn and teachers teach. When you flip your classroom, you offer your students rich, engaging material to consider at home, and you use class time to help them interact with the ideas. Lecturing during class time is minimized and students have a teacher nearby when they are doing work and most likely to need guidance.

5 Killer eLearning Tips To Help You Dominate Content Chunking

5 Killer eLearning Tips To Help You Dominate Content Chunking | Learning in blended environments | Scoop.it

"Reading content on the Internet has changed the way people process information, and nowhere is this change more obvious than in fields where design must adapt to new technology such as in eLearning. eLearning course creators need to refine their content to suit learners’ behavior and accessibility to training. This is where chunking comes into play."

If you design a course, face2face or online, it is important to keep up with information on how people learn, and today we know that chunking information is critical. This post begins by describing what a chunk is and why they are important in learning. It them moves on to the five tips (quoted below):

1. Set a chunking limit

2. Chunk with coherance

3. Use the right formatting

4. Keep chunks short

5. Use the inverted pyramid method for for prioritization

Each of these is described in detail and many addional resources are included in the post. You will also find a SlideShare on the Basics of Content Chunking. If this concept is new to you it will provide additional information. However be aware that the number of items that can be held in short term memory varies, and the rule they use is not accurate for all people. A recent course I took on Coursera, Learning How To Learn, suggested that the number of items most people can keep in short term memory is four.

Blendspace is a web-based content curation tool, designed specifically for educators and teachers. Blendspace sits somewhere between Pinterest and Storify as its power and simplicity make it easy to search multiple sources, import content and visually display it and organize it into boards.

Its unique strength resides in:

  1. Multiple layout pre-sets
  2. Presentation-mode
  3. Collections are embeddable
  4. Easy drag/drop reorganization of boards
  5. Team collaborators (upcoming feature)
  6. Works across all computers and devices

Very easy and intuitive to use, makes the research and collection task intuitive, and organization, presentation and publishing very effective.

I really like how Blendspace works and the results it produces. If you are looking for visual tool to create collections of resources on a specific topic for your class or training program, I'd give Blendspace a try.
