Coursera Founders Tout Promise Of Access That Comes With Online Education | WiredAcademic

Coursera Founders Tout Promise Of Access That Comes With Online Education | WiredAcademic | Learning Happens Everywhere! | Scoop.it
Not everything that happens in an in-person classroom is currently replicated with an online course, and perhaps the experience will never be the quite the same.

Coursera founders Daphne Koller & Andrew Ng wrote a recent column on Forbes.com about the promise of online education. It reveals some of their motivation and hopes behind the free, open courses available at their for-profit startup, Coursera, which is one of the key players among massive open online course (MOOC) providers.

They attempt to address a primary about MOOCS: What’s the point of free open courses if a student doesn’t receive credit? Why are prominent universities and professors spending time on this?

Their short answer is: Access. MOOCs provide greater access to knowledge that many people didn’t have before.

In Izzui, course authors are able to select whether they want to design their course for Mobile or Desktop publishing.

Why Open Education Matters

Why Open Education Matters | Learning Happens Everywhere! | Scoop.it

You may have heard the buzz about the "Why Open Education Matters" video contest, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, Creative Commons, and Open Society Foundations. The contest was meant to raise awareness about the promise of open educational resources (OER) -- free online materials licensed under Creative Commons, which allows educators to reuse, revise, remix and redistribute the content to their heart's content.

All told, there were more than sixty video submissions, and many of the makers outdid themselves with beautiful, passionate, moving videos. The Public Choice voting is open from now through July 11th. I myself am going to have a hard time picking just one to vote on -- so I've chosen a few of my favorites for this playlist.
