A Simple Technique You Can (& Should) Apply To Your eLearning Courses | Learning Happens Everywhere! | Scoop.it

In any course, face2face or online, one of our goals as teachers is to help students move take previous knowledge and extend it to new areas. This post provides four instructional strategies that help students make these shifts:

* Comparing

* Contrasting

* Metaphors

* Analogies

These four strategies are similar in that they require learners to compare at least two items and find similarities and differences.

They provide a "simple technique" that helps students "master complex content."

Additional information is available on each of these strategies, as well as links to additional resources.

What is described in this article are teams. That is OK in the right setting and context. Communities form organically. They are quite messy as opposed to teams which have a more rigid, linear structure. It does not mean teams are not messy, but the are different than communities. This applies in School where the more accurate term for professional learning communities would be professional learning teams. Even this falls short of what I experienced in School.

Learn why it is important to stretch your brain, to try new things (and to fail) and to continue to try and improve. Learn about our "Lizard Brain"  (also known as the amygdala),an important component of our brain that impacts how we learn, but the learning is related to the time when humans hunted in the wild. This part of the brain holds us back in many ways, and although it once protected us now it tends to hold us back.

What can we do about this? The video explores this and discusses some of the ways we can "dance" with this "Lizard Brain" and move from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. For more information take the time to watch this video.

Today many of our students are consumers, yet Common Core would like them to be more creative. What can we do as teachers to help our students become more creative?

This post begins with an exploration of research that has taken place in this area. Below is one quote from the post.

“Understanding, identifying, and nurturing the creative potential is relevant in education if we want students able to solve academic and personal problems and challenges, to find innovative solutions and alternatives, and to have better tools and resources for success in a fast-changing world...”

Affirmation-the inquiry process (which includes creativity and so many other HOT skills) is so important even for our youngest learners.  It's so important they work through the process and create something to show their learning at the end!  It may be a challenge, but the risk is worth it!
